Hey Everyone,

I just bought a 70 Duster project. The previous owner had a 400 built for it and no transmission. The car itself is a slant 6/4 speed original car. I hunted down a transmission today, an a833 out of a 71 slant 6 a body. I called my transmission shop and the owner said it would not be the most cost effective way to go because the bellhousing for the big block is different than the slant 6. As far as I can tell, A body, Big Block, a833 transmissions are not exactly easy to find. Would my best option be to find an A Body transmission and just buy a big block bellhousing for it?

Thanks for your help.

Check Brewers web site or Passion performance web site. Lots of info

I've checked their websites as well as a few others and can't seem to find the bellhousing issue. It seems like the best bet would be to buy a transmission from one of them and then a big block bellhousing (QuickTime seems to be popular) but just wanted to make sure I'm not missing anything.

What is wrong with the 833 4 speed that you already have? It sounds like you just need the bellhousing (and clutch and linkage and freewheel and........) to mate it to your big block. The mount face of the 833 four speeds are qll the same. The engine side of the bellhousing, however, is different between the three engine families.

D55dave said it.

Get a new transmission shop.

ANY A body four speed is fine. Get the big block bell housing and let it rip.

It didn't come with the transmission when I bought it. I found a a833 out of a 66 a body on craigslist but I think the flange vs slip joint style of the transmission would pose some issues.

I think I have this sorted out... One last thing, is there a specific brand scatter shield you guys would recommend? I am looking at the Lakewood one right now.

What about this one?
The input shaft, main bearing retainer also came in different sizes

I could use the one out of the 71 and get a scatter shield for it and I think it will be good to go!

Thank you!

yesan a body bb bells are not an easy find , but in bet some one here would have one for sale , the /6 and 318 two bbl trannies have to light of an output shaft for your needs , all a833 have the same mounting pattern at the bell housing , and a bodies use a shorter tail stock version than b's or e's a833 . but you can make your car fix a b or e trans into it . just a special linkage adapter mount using the e body trans . some mod to the trans , but an easy mod , go to bigblockdart.com . and see whats what . hope it helps .

65 was the last year for the flange output. 66 and up was slip yoke.

yes but two different slipe yorks types , 904 auto or the hd 727 type . and the flanged trans have a real bearing on the output shaft , and a wider gear package . and its output shaft is stronger than the 904 type output . but you can take and change output shafts with tail stocks . were not talking od tranny's .

and i might ad that those three part scatter shield is much easier to work with in an a body car . solid type are very hard to work with . in any body . and if you go to a after market bell housing , you must check the center line of the crank and the center of the bore in the bell housing . there are offset block dowel alignment pins made just for this fix . miss alignment can cause a number of issues

oh and there flywheel sized on the stock type bell housings . just look at the one piece type scatter shield on ebay . i don't recommend that type , unless you like to add hours to your work on the car . and also non high performance cars used a smaller though rod on the paddle assemblies also .

It looks like the trans out of the 71 sold. The other one is out of a 65 with the flange style yoke. Can I change the yoke to the slip yoke style or is it better to keep hunting for a later model trans? BTW price is $200 for the trans. Not sure if all the modifications is going to make it more expensive than just buying from Passons.

well the case and gears are well worth 200 bucks . and you can run the truck type driveline like this in it also . change no thing but your driveline witch you have to build any way . there is a yoke replacing the flat flange or they do make a derict fit to the flange . way lees costly then brewers or passons .

oh ya , three different flywheels that fit you 6 bolt crank flange , the early 273 10'' clutch max (to small a ring for bb bells ) 130 tooth 318 , 361 , 383 , 413 car , 426 wedge 10 1/2 '' clutch . next up 143 tooth 71 383 , 440 , 440 6pck 11'' scalped clutch and truck used a 12'' clutch . and the 426 hemi has a eight bolt crank , but its 172 tooth . and each one uses a different stock bell housing .
