I have to replace the master cylinder on my 72 Demon. It has the
kelsey-hayes set up with small bolt pattern. I would like to try an
aluminum master cylinder and wanted some input on which one to use.
The car has manual disc brakes on it and was wondering what bore size
to use and what the difference it would make as far as pedal pressure.
Would the bore size have an affect on stopping power?The rear brakes
are drums. Thanks guys.
 
Going to an aluminum master cylinder will not do anything except reduce a little weight. (The brake system can't tell the difference between cast iron and aluminum)

Bore size effects the amount of pressure you need to put on the peddle for your brakes to get working.

In the end….. The brakes themselves do the stopping and the stock discs should do a good job of getting a light a-body back to 0 mph.


Make sure the rest of the system is working correctly. Get good pads and shoes. If your rubber lines are 40 years old, replace them. If your brake fluid is 40 years old, flush it. Turn and clean everything. Adjust things properly.

By changing the bore size of the master cylinder you can adjust the amount of pressure output. The smaller the bore of the master the more pressure it puts out. The trade off is pedal travel. Too small a bore will stop you nicely but you may be very uncomfortable with the travel. Typically you can gain a 25% increase in pressure output by dropping to a 1” bore master from 1-1/8”.
