In my opinion, whoever is spending money (our money?) for road signs and TV and radio announcements to encourage seat belt use is wasting our time watching them and wasting someone's money paying for them. Anyone with a driver's license (or anyone who has EVER ridden in a motor vehicle certainly must know what a seat belt is, how to buckle it, how to release it, what it does and what it does not do.

The problem with these public service announcements (again, my opinion) is the persons that use seatbelts (or refrain from smoking, drugs, etc) will do the correct thing without a stupid reminder. The other people who choose to not use their seat belt, will not change their behavior regardless of a road sign or TV commercial. Same goes for smokers (who can read the warning labels on the packaging) or those who litter despite the $1000 fine road signs along the highways. Which reminds me, I have never heard of a person being fined even a dollar for littering, have you? You can send all the money cancelled that has been scheduled for future advertising and road signs for such ignoramus and wasteful ineffective brainwashing adds directly to me, please. Thank you.

They have those signs here also, and as a matter of fact I wrote the local PD traffic enforcement Captain about that as well as when they spent a grant that they got on new stop signs for the entire town.
I told him and the Mayor both that enforcing stopping at the stop signs would be a better use of time and resources than buying all new sign that these people ignore, and that stopping the accidents from people running them would do even more good to save lives and injuries as well as cut down the damage to property (the cars and whatever else they hit in the process)

Then while talking to the Mayor one day I find that they don't even recycle the old signs (1/8 aluminum) because they don't want to do the paperwork explaining where they got the extra income from, or possibly cause the next year grant to be lower.
They GIVE it all to the local recycler the lazy bastards, instead of recovering some of our damn street maintenance tax money.
Our streets SUCK and most of the town with the exception of the normal tourist thruways don't even have curbs or street lighting for pedestrian safety.
There is an intersection a block from my house in a 25mph zone that it is common to see an upside down car or two in it, or even upside down in someone's front yard around the intersection.
45 in a 25 and 65 in the local 45, along with running stops is common as hell here, so guess what happens?
There are only TWO traffic enforcement officers in the entire force of 62 officers.
They did go out and buy Can Am three wheelers with the grant from last year for when they have events so the officers don't have to walk through the crowds.

Here in Mexico they solve a lot of those problems for next to nothing: speed bumps.

Yea, they tried that here for awhile but took them back out because the people bitched about them.
They flat out told me once that the reason they don't enforce the use of turn signals is because ticketing for it pisses off the rich people and they might move to somewhere else.
MAN I have a lot of names for these shitheads and the city government.

Yeah I agree! Probably the biggest issue in our country right now is seatbelt commercials and traffic signs!

I just wish the media would focus on the real problems instead of wasting my precious time with all the news about war and people dying in the Middle East, children starving to death in 3rd world countries, or even all the homeless and jobless Americans! Let's get down to the real issues people, like annoying commercials and ineffective traffic signs!

If you are so concerned about those issues that you feel they cannot coexist with, or override other concerns....then wtf are you doing in the General section of an A Bodies Mopar forum? Shouldn't you be out saving the World?

I just think people lose focus on the real problems out there and get distracted by things that in comparison are petty and overall not a big deal. I'm just as guilty as anybody else. Complaining about gas prices and having to work on a Saturday, etc.

And as far as saving the world goes, I have been raising money for JDRF all week...

In my town they put share the road with bicycle signs all over the place ($$$$$). I wish they did that years ago now I feel bad cause of all the bicyclists I've ran over through out the years cause I didn't have a sign to tell me what to do.

I say we repeal the seat belt law.

Isn't the republican campaign centered around less government intrusion?

Aren't most law enforcement agencies staffed with predominantly republicans?

I have the inverse opinion. People spend too much time focusing on Global and National problems instead of concerning themselves with things they have more influence over.

You have two circles. A Circle of concern and a Circle of influence. Which is bigger?

To tie this in with the seat belt signs, when did the business of self-responsibility become a government institution?

Right about the same time government institution started sticking it's nose into self responsibility, that's when.
You asked.

Guess I don't have this "problem."

Never see any advertisements or PSA's about seatbelts. During the long weekends, like this past Labor Day, you might see a digital, programmable sign along the highway that says something along the lines seatbelts being a law, but during the regular weekdays, these signs are usually informational highway signs that might warn of an accident ahead, construction zones, or missing person's alerts.

Putting signs up on the side of the street is not effective... Too many people drive with their face in their phones and don't even see the signs because their head is in their @ss...

If they are too dumb to wear a seat belt or put down the cell phones, then when they get in an accident and die, the general IQ of the public will be increased - Darwin theory....

My grandfather had a good saying that fits this situation perfectly:

"WAKE UP AND DIE RIGHT..."

what we need to do is bring back overpowered rear wheel drive cars with bench seats
I can assure you that would increase the wearing of seatbelts
I know mine has kept me from sliding out the passengerside door many a time, especially during left hand turns under acceleration

Instead of making thousands thousands of rules and regulations that are absurd to know even a small percentage of, it would be nice if we lived by this simple motto: Don't hurt people, and don't take their stuff.

The seat belt laws are so damn wrong. If you are not wearing a seat belt and want to take the risk, it is your own damn buisiness. I wear mine all the time, but do not judge others for not wearing theirs, I will tell them it is a generally good idea, that does not mean that people have not been killed by seat belts in various ways though.

The newest trend here is expensive round abouts that make truck drivers routinely clip the ill-placed signs.

The newer cars and trucks are only getting worse. A 2016 Silverado came in at work for a deer hit. Well the exterior damage was minor. But the deer got clipped by the driver's fender and spun around into the driver's door, activating the side impact sensor. I had to remove the front seats, headliner, and disassemble the center console. New headliner, both curtain air bags, drivers side front seat air bag, drivers door air bag sensor, drivers seat cover, air bag control module, andboth of the seat belt tensioners on each front seat. Truck had 5800 miles on it. You cannot buy a new truck that does not have all this crap. You could probaby kick in the door of a new truck and send the airbags a blazing!

What a joke. Next ALL new cars are getting automatic emergency braking. They crucified VW for getting a fraction of a percent higher emmissions to get their customers better power and efficiency. While they never talk about the people getting killed by self driving car incidents.. end rant.

I agree that it should be, but unfortunately it is their business when anyone, even an illegal alien, can walk into an emergency room and get care. I don't believe the State sees seat belt laws and signs as a preventative safety measure as much as it is a cost related one. Any wreck with injuries will get EMT and Fire services called to it regardless of insurance or licensing.

Indeed it is not going to change any time soon. And I agree that most gov't employees have good intentions, but the efficiency is not there, and the more people from incompatable cultures we keep shipping in, the more dependents we get. Up here we have a big problem with Somali's driving into walls, poles, buildings, and pedestrians.

What's gonna happen next? God knows. Eventially will try to outlaw old cars completely is my guess. But at 20 trillion dollars of Federal debt, I cannot see the current monetary system lasting another 20 years. Time will tell though.

The texting and driving thing is definitely a problem. I see it all the time and it keeps me driving defensivly and keeps my eyes on the road. The new cars seem to have a lot of distractions built right into the dash as well, but I have no experience daily driving them as our newest car is an 05 without all the touchscreen stuff.
