Getting ready to install a Carter electric fuel pump on my 1973 340 Sport. Have a question about part of the instructions. See the attached picture. The instructions show a Tee fitting on each side of the pump with a check valve. What's the purpose? Is it in place of a return line? Since mine is a 1973, I've done away with the charcoal canister under the hood and dead-ended the line from the tank with a small breather in the engine compartment. Suggestions appreciated.

maybe that is for an installation that keeps the mechanical pump? that way, if you don't use the electric one, it doesn't work so hard trying to pull thru it. just my thought. I had no "T"s on mine but also no mechanical pump.
