Conv top dying

-
I want to dye/paint my white top red.
What product do you all think would look and hold up the best?
SEM Upholstery Paint?

Wouldn't you use red vinyl paint ? I remember spraying a vinyl landau top on my chrysler white. it did look better, for a while .

On a vinyl top that does not move perhaps a "paint" might work but on a convert top I'm thinking some form of dye would be best.

Call Electron Top in NY (iirc) and see what they say.

I had some great results with this.

Just remember before dying the top that it has to be extremely "clean". Once you think you are there, clean it two more times. Be sure to scrub around all of the seams and fasteners to root out any dirt.

This, 100%. If there has ever been any conditioner applied to the top, you will play hell trying to get an even dye, even after cleaning it. More than likely it will become a botched job and you will be buying a new top. Products like Armor All will not allow the dye to soak into the fabric, no matter how long ago it was applied.

There is a type of paint for plastics / vinyls that molecularly bonds to the plastic. this is one odf the class of paint that does this.

CB-135 ColorBond LVP Universal Leather, Vinyl & Plastic Spray Paint, Competition Red 12 oz. - Seymour Paint.

Note that it dries to the touch in 45 seconds. that is a que that this is the type of paint.

Back in the 90s I painted a computer case with this type ( not this particular) paint and I could not scratch the paint off. I could gouge the surface and remove plastic or I could dent the surface but not remove the color.

It was amazing stuff, as I recall it had a real nasty sounding name as its primary ingredient

pretty much going o be a flexible paint and then only if you don't raise or lower the top much or even drive it... have you ever seen the top when you are driving it and a window is down? (thing vibration as bending it all that time) Vinyl tops are hard to clean (you clean then clean again about 6 time and it MIGHT be clean enough to hold the flexible paint) and dying only goes on the surface and doesn't penetrate well. you couod do it right before you sell it like the old used car honest johns do but that's about all the life it'll have
