This past Sunday I pulled the 318 from my Duster and I want to make sure I didn't mess anything up. I was browsing through my FSM and there was something about pulling the transmission and converter together as an assembly in order to not mess up some seal or something; when I pulled my engine, the converter came with the engine and slid off the input shaft. Did I do this right, or should I have detached the converter from the flex plate first and left it on the transmission?

One other thing, my friend is looking at getting a '70's Dodge van and has his eye on a '79 with a 360/727. The owner says it has a loose tailshaft bushing; would that be easy to fix with the transmission in the van?

Now that the engine is out remove the flex plate bolts to remove the converter from the engine. You should have done that prior to pulling the engine and left the converter with the trans as you probably already know now. Get a seal puller and pull the front seal out of the trans. Take it to the auto parts store and get another one. I use 2" PVC pipe and a hammer to drive the new seal in. Make sure converter is 1/2" below the trans housing after its installed to prevent damage when you mate it back to the engine. I just did this and I had to move the shift selector around in order to get the converter to seat all the way.

The tail house can be removed from the trans with the trans in the van in order to replace the housing bushing.
