What are the plastic plugs in the floor pans for?

I have thought of eliminating them and welding the holes shut.

Before I do that, I should find out why they are there.

Some may be there for access to various fasteners, but the majority, to my understanding; were put there to aid in draining the shell when it got dipped in primer on the assembly line.

The holes were in place for the 7 stage body dip / primer so the excess fluids the cars were immersed in could drain out of the low points in the body.

Removal of the plugs can still come in handy at times, windows left down in a rain storm as one possible example.

Just another thing to consider.....

Some of the new aftermarket panels do not have the holes pre-punched.

So seeing a floor, trunk floor or rear quarter extensions with no holes for plugs is the sign of a 'less than restored' car to many.

Yup. One bad heater core or downpour, or Super Big Gulp, and you'll be glad they're there.

I didn't have all the plugs so I just cut out the appropriate size metal circles and welded em up. I guess if it gets wet in there I'd have take every thing out anyhow, to clean it all up. I'm a car show guy not a show car guy. Lol

DMT sells new plug kits, they fit well and have everything you need to replace the originals. Usually when you pull the originals plugs they get damaged as they’re old and dried up. It’s a lot less time consuming to replace them with new plugs then weld up the holes. And if for some reason you need to drain a low spot on the car the plugs can come in handy.
