how much gear oil for dana 60?

i put 3 quarts of lucas 85 140 in the dana and oil started coming out of fill hole. is 3 quarts enough?, i thought these took about 5 or 6 quarts.

I put about 3.5 litres in my moser dana 60 and still not quite upto the fill hole ? Does it really need more ?? Does it depend on center and axle tube size etc ??
