One of the 'plus' details said of this box, it will, '...increase coil voltage when cranking for quicker cold starts.'

Another statement says it will 'increase dwell' on cold starts.

Does that effect initial timing?

I just put in the HRR688 with its associated Pertronix 40011 coil. First start attempt stalled the starter. Classic 'too much' initial timing event. The dist. was not touched. Timing was not changed. It is 12º BTDC which is the same as it's been for a long while. Engine did eventually start.

It's the first attempt 'stall' that got me wondering about timing changes.

The only thing(s) changed were the coil and box install. Ballast was bypassed before, it was bypassed on this first start.

Anyone know how the advertised dwell change with this box changes timing and how much it DOES change?

I understand that 'increased dwell' does not mandate a change in timing, but...probably. My starter certainly thinks it does.

Thanks.

Sounds like a lot of 'Who shot John'......
There is PLENTY of dwell at idle & lower rpms...& it doesn't need any more. It is at higher rpms that not enough dwell can cause misfires...

I do not know the ign module you are using, but it could have electronically modified dwell. Get it running, check idle timing. Then, use another box, check & compare the timing.

I intend no finger-pointing or blaming anyone, or wanting to make a non-sensical mess about anything (the definition of Who Shot John).

I did say that idle timing is the same (12ºBTDC) in the new spark setup as it was in the earlier. That does not account for crank-speed timing (500rpm and below) which is area the HRR box is stated to change dwell numbers.

I can check crank speed timing easily enough. The point of my question is to, hopefully, find out what others have already sorted.

I intend it to be a simple question: If the HRR box changes crank-speed timing, how much is that change?
