I’m working on a Chrysler 318 4bbl intake I bought off Fakebook market place. I cleaned it up in the sand blaster and gave it a coat of primer. It will still need a ton of cleaning before paint and install, BUT I always get all my machining done first before the complete cleaning.
Our friend : #318willrun has an awesome channel on Utube and he has plenty of info on these cast factory intakes.
Also, a great guy to bounce questions off. He convinced me (watching his channel) a stock cast 4bbl is great for an upgrade on my vans 86-318 without big cost. This 4100340 cost me $50. Vs a $425 bill for an Edelbrock 2176 aluminum 4bbl intake. I need the offset thermostat so I can run the factory ac compressor.
After clean up and removing all the stuff, the issue is how to plug the holes inside the ports under the carb opening.
one hole is a bare hole (no threads) into the exhaust cross over. 1/2” inside diameter.
The second hole is a weird thread 11-1/2 x12 straight thread. Kinda like a 5/8” garden hose thread but not perfectly a match.
After searching, auto part stores, hardware stores and a very large hydraulic repair shop I had to plug them on my own. I could had welded them up but it would had made a mess.
I went with 1/2” freeze plug for the small one.
For the second hole I needed to try a 1” freeze plug but it was too big so I really needed a 15/16” but that was not able to be had locally. I did the next best thing and drove a 1/2 freeze plug inside the removable screw in defuser tube and cut off the tube part and screwed it back in thus plugging both holes. Now not all intakes have this exact configuration- but it is just to show you “where there is a will, there is a way.”
