So on the off chance that they could do it, I called safelite to see if they could install a windshield and new gasket in my dart. They were adamant they could. Quite reasonably also. I even called twice to double check and specified 1970 dodge dart hardtop. Old car!Big rubber gasket. Not urethane.
SO long story short. I pulled it out, repaired the rust and called to schedule and now they act like I'm an idiot and cars didn't exist in 1970.

Which leads me to my questions.
1.Who has the best price on a windshield for a 1970 2 door hardtop dart?
2. Is the gasket the same for the 2 door and the 4 door? I bought a new gasket from a guy in a lot of parts he had left over from an abandoned project. I'd love to use it if I can.
3. do I need a separate lock strip?

1.Who has the best price on a windshield for a 1970 2 door hardtop dart?
That depends on who actually has one in stock, and what it would cost to ship to you if they are not local to you.

NO! The front windshield gasket for a 2-door HT is different than the gasket for a 2-SEDAN or 4-door SEDAN.

3. do I need a separate lock strip?
No, those gaskets do not require a lock-strip.

thank you

I have a Safelight windshield in my Dart and I noticed a bunch of little chips in it . I have only had this car on the freeway once and I keep a good distance from the cars in front of me .
Cheap glass … urghh

For what its worth, I purchased mine from AMD tinted as stock. Picked up Local as they are only about 26 miles away. I used a local Shop I had previous experience with on my 2000 Dodge
3500 Dually (Southern Glass in Dawsonville, Ga.) Shout out to some good ole folks! The car was already prepped as it had been through a complete nut and bolt resto! I had purchased the gasket with all my other Resto parts.
They same guy that did the Truck showed up and "Melted" at the thought of being able to install both the front and rear Glass in my FB 69 Fish. He recognized the Dually right away, and allowed me to assist and the price was 100% nice, he left me with bone tools and few other item's to assist with the rest the glass! The AMD WS had all the correct markings and logo in the lower center. I have have no leaks in 8 years now.

Great prices, and name glass- not cheap thin offshore stuff.
Just got a Pilkington windshield with factory tint for my '66. Under $200 to a local warehouse, couldn't be happier. I'm lucky- a good buddy is a retired glass man, so installation cost me a case of beer. I've done them myself, but why not use a pro? He only drinks Pabst, so even that was cheap!

I drive a lot of rentals and the new Chevy's are especially bad about cheap windshield glass. Chips/cracks galore.

My Dad is a PBR man and will drink Tall boys in his absolutely worn out Dale Earnhardt Coozy, I bought for him at his First Daytona 500 race in 1998! He, My family have roots in and from Florida since the 1850's!
we often ponder how many have gone through that coozy! I did some math from 1998 until 2025 and roughly 4 to 6 a day, on the light side I come up with 49k tall boy PBR's have been through that Coozy!
Not sure if that is a good thing or not! Pop's is 89 now And only allowed his tall boy PBR! The Wild Turkey is Banned!!!

Nice Pabst story on your part!

My bad … I just realized while washing the Swinger that it still has the original windshield in it .
My Barracuda has the safelite.

Very few around here will do classic cars glass. I’m told the windshields are thinner but AMD is not. I have a new AMD but haven’t measured it.

Same on 2 vehicles I had them do. Had them come back out and they said I’d only see them in the sun. Garbage company!

Got mine from vintage glass $295

Post #12 is dead nuts on. Very few places around anymore will even look at installing a gasketed windshield. One of the few exceptions would be actual GOOD body shops. But here's the thing. Installing a windshield in these old girls is EASY PEASY. I can do one with Kitty's help in around 30 minutes and that's including removing the old one. We installed the one in Vixen in less time than that. Since she has a lock strip, that makes it a little easier, but the one piece gasket without the lock strip is dang near as easy. It's a very simple thing to do. The biggest trick is to do it on a hot summer day so the gasket will be really soft and pliable.

First of all, I despise Safelite. They are twice and sometimes three times as expensive as a local glass shop. I called them once for a windshield in my Dodge Dakota. They quoted me over $400. Then they got REALLY pushy trying to get me to agree to an appointment time, AND they wanted a credit card number after I said no. I finally hung up on them. Then I went to Jayhawk Glass and got one installed for $125. The guy told me they got their glass from the same source as Safelite.

I do NOT understand that at all. It is way easier to install a gasket windshield on an older car than screwing around with using the polyurethane goop and setting the windshield in like on modern cars. I have done a bunch of gasket windshields on older cars. Piece of cake.

I know it is. You know it is. We all HERE know it. But THEY don't, because all THEY mess with are newer vehicles. So they're skeered of anything outside their box. Just like everything else in this hobby. We gotta look out for ourselves.

With the string trick…

just went through this with the AMD rear tinted glass for my Duster, first glass was deformed and wavy and wouldnt fit in the opening, second piece was also too big for the opening, i finally bought glass from vintage auto glass and it fit.. I had to pay glass guy 3 times to come out and he struggled so hard with the AMD glass that each time he tore the gasket.. You guys can do the math
3 gaskets
3 install charges
intense anger...priceless
plus the glass price... its a long story and AMD partially covered me but was never made whole...

I do it a different way now that I think is even easier. I wish I had one to do, I'd do a how to on it.
I would like to see that. I installed my front and rear myself on both my Darts. If my memory serves me correct, I laid the bottom glass in the gasket and used thin rope to pull the sides and top. Maybe with the right hook style tool the rope wouldn't be needed. IDK

I tape the gasket to the car. Lay the windshield in the lower groove like you say and then spray a warm soap and water solution on the gasket as I use some home made tools out of paint sticks to gently pry the gasket around the windshield. The key is to make the tools DULL on the end so as not to puncture the gasket and take your time. It'll be installed in 15 minutes. Maybe less with a helper on the other side. Once I get it in, I rinse all the soap off and blow it completely dry with an air blower and apply some clear sealer between the gasket and pinch weld and then between the windshield and the gasket. A lot of people don't use sealer, but I do. Why take a chance on a leak?

A cheap trim tool set will have plastic tools with rounded ends that are good for windshield installation. I also have a nylon stick for that purpose but can't seem to find it now I have glass to install shortly.

Yup> Thats what I thought. I will try it soon on my Ragtop front and Hardtop rear. Both leaking. :BangHead: That's what I get for using no sealer.
