Hello all. I'm trying to learn about my 2000 Nissan Pathfinder so that I may fix it myself as a new hobby and to save myself time stress and money from having to find a reliable crook to overcharge me for **** that I dont need just so they can get more money out of me . So I'm open to any and all suggestions and tips . This week the topic is breaks. I've replaced the front break pads and driver side caliber but then the wheel locks up and tire doesn't move it drags and I've had 2 tires on the that particular wheel go flat within 3 days of each other well looked at it got the wheel to stop locking up and now I have no breaks . Non I have to put it in 4 wheel drive and use the E BREAK to get it to stop and even then I find myself veering so I don't hit the person in front of me . Any ideas? Oh and I'm single in colorado so that's fun when trying to get my car running well

Hi, Welcome. it sounds like you need some motorhead friends in Colorado to help you fix your stuff.
Regarding the brakes, there's not much to a brake system (lines, fluid, calipers, master cylinder, proportioning valve, abs if equipped, booster). So the problem could be one or any combination of them. Just for peace of mind, whenever I buy a new daily driver, I replace as many of those components as possible, which rules out any future brake problems and helps to hone in on resolving current problems. Your brakes locking up could be due to seized caliper pistons, faulty master cylinder, faulty booster, or something else.
Personally, if it was me, I'd make friends with an A-Bodyer in Denver and pay him a small fee to fix the brakes for you. Then after that serious safety hazard is taken care of, you can concentrate on learning whatever is going to break on your Pathfinder next, without worrying about crashing.

Did you use a "C" clamp to push the caliper piston all the way in before you put the new pads on?

I think you mean brakes, because you don't want anything to break. lol

Like with our Mopars, the first thing I suggest is to get a factory (not Haynes or Chiltons, but NISSAN) service manual for it and then sit down and READ it. Then read it some more.

I would advise you, Please do not drive the vehicle until the brake system is properly fixed and tested. This is one area where safety is non-negotiable.

Sounds like there's air in system. When you use the E brake, that's mechanical not hydraulic. You also mentioned changing out a caliper, did you bleed the entire brake system starting with the wheel farthest from the master cylinder (passenger rear) ?

Get a couple quarts of brake fluid and bleed the whole system and purge out as much old fluid as you can, till you see only new brake fluid coming out through the bleeder screws.

Air in the system can cause a locked wheel because air compresses preventing smooth pressure transfer and cause unpredictable and erratic braking.

Welcome - but do you realize this site is dedicated to the A Body Classic Mopar? (Dodge, plymouth, chrysler) ---
