How important are these little wedge shaped things on the factory oil rings? I lost a few of them and they don’t seem to do anything. The upper and lower oil rings seem to hold the middle ring in place

are you reusing the oil rings?
Those pieces only help keep the ring expander from overlapping before you get the oil rails in place .
After you get them on,,,,,they do nothing .
If you’re reusing the rings,,,,,make certain you have cleaned everything as well as possible please.
Those look filthy,,,,but I understand an emergency rebuild,,,,but they work much better clean .
