Hello,

This may be a bit long, so I apologize.

My wife and I are both avid off-road enthusiasts. She likes the dirt with bikes and 4x4's as do I. We currently have two newer bikes. I have a KX 500 that is dead stock and basically new. She has a CRF 230. As you can imagine, she is in 3rd gear while I am lugging in first. It does not work real well. I end up hanging back and then cranking it on to clean it out every so often.

Now we are looking at quads.

We want 2wd sport quads. Local use in sandy soils from our house. We may do some other fire roading etc. around here as well. We can ride for days from our house.

We also intend to do to the dunes. We are two hours from X-mas Valley and about three plus from the coast. Probably would be hitting the dunes at the coast about 4-5 times a year.

We both want the same quads.

The 700 Raptor is pretty tempting. Whatever I buy, I want something that does not require daily maintenence. Reliablility is key. Maintenence is fine and I am capable. But I get enough wrenching with my cars and Jeeps so that the other toys need to be reliable.

Any thoughts, input on other quad options? I would rather drop the big coin and get something decent from the get go. I don't want to buy a 250 and then wish for more.

We are not real agressive riders, but we do like speed and hillclimbing.

I'm thinking if we get something larger and leave it basically stock that we would be happier than a smaller modified one.

Kind of like a mild 440 vs. a real high winding 273 thing.

Are their other options for quads that fit the bill?? Other opinions and experiences.

Thanks, ROB

I have a 660 Raptor i bought after having a 350 and 2 400s.As far as power
goes the Raptor was the best but the KFX400 handled way better and had
the best ride.We would go to Arkansas at least one week a year and the
terrain is really rough so handling and ride were more important than the
power.Depends on where you ride mainly,if your doing dunes wide open
the Raptor would be one of the best,as far as trail riding goes the 400s
and 450s would probably be better for you.Check out this website it will
tell you everythng you need to know about Raptors.Good luck.

The KFX 700 is a pretty awesome machine. Tons of power and nice handling. Nice hill climbing machine too.

I have pretty much nailed it down to the Honda TRX 700 or the Raptor 700.

We live in an area of deep snow, wooded fire roads etc. Lots of rocks and stuff in the roads.

I am wondering if the mild handling concerns of the TRX are worth the trade up in ground clearance.

I don't know if handling concerns is too strong of a word. I have read that they do alot of things better than a regular quad, just that they do handle a bit different.

We have decided to go with EFI for sure.

I tend to buy toys like this for the long haul. Not something that I am throwing a few bucks on the table for a summer thing.

I am checking out the Raptor forum right now. It is interesting.

Thank you for your help.

im an arcit cat guy myself but if i had to chose between a honda and a yammaha i would take the yammaha anyday. that yammahammer will handle better, and the yammaha will have way more power than that honda. as far as i know the yamaha is a pretty reliable machine
