Purple Vs Lunati Voodoo

This is my first Mopar its a 1973 Dart Swinger 318 auto, now I normally play with the Blue Oval & they tend to like 500 lift with 280 deg dur at a min.
I have noticed that there is a strong debate over Mopar Purple & Lunati cams & it looks like hydraulic cam for Mopars are under 500 lift.
THIS DART IS ONLY GOING TO BE A STREETER WITH CASUAL DRAG USE & I only want hydraulic.
Here is the specs on the mods that I'm looking at. I have not brought anything so far but I will be going through Summit.

318 auto remeber 1973 has low compression I think its 8.9 to 1
Offenhauser 5700 360 deg single quad high rise
Holley Street avenger 670
Proform extruded shaft mount roller rockers 1.5 ratio
Headman Headers
Carter hi volume mech fuel pump
Standard heads with slight clean up
904 with shift improver & 2800 stally
3.5 to 1 rear LSD
Tyre roll out 26inch
Rev range 1800 to 6000

I'm after a cam, lifters & springs to suit this combo, your oppions & what has worked would help

Tell about how to build a throttle/kickdown linkage bracket for a /6 Aussiespeed Hurricane and I'll tell you what I know about the '73 318. (lol) I'll start.

Compression ratio is 8.6:1 at best on a USA spec '73 318. With that compression ratio, I don't recommend anything over 214º duration @ .050 lift. Mill the head about .020, do a 3-angle valve job and use the 67-70 318 piston, you can get away with up to 224º duration @ .050. That ought to bump compression to around 9.3:1. Going much past that with iron heads is tempting pre-ignition with the fuels in the US. Stock heads tend to quit gaining flow around 5500 rpm.

I built a 318 using the P4452761 cam (268/272 .450/.455 lift) and P4120249 springs. I used a 625 cfm Carter and a dual plane Eddy. It was a fun, responsive street engine. The springs will support up to 284/284 .484 lift cam.

Mopar Performance makes hydraulic cams up to 320/320 .533 lift for fully modified drag engines. I've heard good things about the 292/292 .508 lift cam in the 360. IMO it's too much for the street.

I don't have a Lunati/Holley book, so I don't have anything from there I could recommend. People seem happy with the Voodoo line of cams they make.
 
FWIW the Voodoo 256/262 is working fantastic in the car in my sig. The engine has more torque than stock off idle and starts to really pull hard around 2600 RPM. I'm glad I chose this cam as I know that anything bigger would just make it even more sluggish on takeoff with the stock converter and rear. Since you have 3.55s and a stall converter I'd say go with the Voodoo 262/268. That cam could definitely use some better heads and more compression though, if you decide to upgrade more in the future.
 
Cant realy help just yet,but my 360 just got the P4452992 purple cam.I know its an old unit but on outher sites lots of guys love it.

LOL! Photo is the, made in Australia, Hurricane intake manifold. I'm working on a throttle/kickdown linkage mount so I can put it in my 73 slant six Dart.

The 67 LA 318 (64-67 273) heads and the 302 heads have the smallest chambers for best compression. The 360 heads won't help you gain compression, but with bigger valves will flow better. Mopar started putting hardened valve seats in heads in the LA V-8 after 1972 models for use with unleaded fuel.

For better compression on the piston side, use the 67-70 318 piston. It comes closest to the deck for 318 flat tops. FWIW, I have a 68 318 in the Demon with 302 heads. Other than a little port clean up on the heads, they are stock. The garage I use measured the compression ratio at 9.3:1.

I personally like the Lunati cams as they are more aggressive than the purple cams and have a little more duration and lift on the exhaust side to help it exhale better. They also have more lift as you noted which can help make more power by getting the valve lift up in the higher flowing region faster. I run the Lunati 60404 (234/242 at .050", and .513/.533 lift) in my 360 and it runs great. I wouldn't go that big in your teen since the compression is too low for it. The 60401 or 60402 should work real good for you if you decide to go with a Lunati.

A note on the purple cams: I've read a few reports where guys got them and they were defective. They were ground off by as much as 8 degrees. If I'm not mistaken Ma Mopar farms them out to whoever gives them the best bid price. With that, quality goes out the window sometimes. Just something to think on.

have u got to run the aussie manifold yet? i have a clifford 4 brl with a 600dp holley. thot if maybe changing in the future...

I think either the 60401/60402 would be a good choice for you,i've run 3 of the "voodoo" cams in my motors all with excellent results..the mopar cams are "old" design and outdated leave em' on the shelf...

I am running the same, probably will go with a 2500 stall convertor..you think the 60403 268/276 would be to much in a street car?:glasses7:
 
I run the 60403 in my car Duster. 340 4-speed with 3.23s, LD340 and 850 thermoquad. flirting with high 12s once i improve my 60' time as im at 103-104 mph in the 1/4 mile...

Gears are killing me off the line but i like driving my car to the track on the freeway so its a good all around.

I came from a mild Purple Shaft which ran good but the Lunati you can feel a more even powerband from idle on up.

No it's not too much on the street but if you go with the 60403 go with a 3000 converter. That cam is a little big for a 2500 stall IMO...

Yep. Ran it then switched to a Lunati 60404 and the car ran considerably better than the Chevy grind comp cam. That was in a 360 with 4.10 gears. Your 3.23's won't work good with it IMO. Not sure why you jumped in asking about one cam then all of a sudden your "going" with a completely different cam.

Funny to see this brought back I'm still running that same '60401' voodoo cam now in my 10.5:1 360 five years later. Behaves very differently with the big jump in cubes and compression from the tired 318, massive torque 1800-5000ish RPM then I can feel it start to nose over a tad. No wear issues either being a "steep" cam I have maybe 10k hard miles on it including about 8 passes down the strip, I run either Valvoline VR1 or Mobil 1 high-performance oil they both contain zinc and are intended for flat tappet cams.

I've been looking at bigger cams to open up the top end HP a bit and I would get the 60403 but it has too much lift for my 1.6 rockers and stock Magnums, got my eye on a Crower with similar numbers but a bit less lift
