i have a 76 360 with j heads, hyd. cam was in it and that's what is going back in. i pulled the stamped rockets for a set of Speedmaster adjustable roller rockers. i am asking about my process to get the pushrod length right. install the 2 adjustable pushrods in #1 intake/exhaust, intake starts to open adjust exhaust for zero lash and 1/4 turn more. vise-versa for intake adjustment roll engine twice and record max lift, if i get the cam lift at rockers. that's the correct pushrod length to purchase. i did some reading here but didn't really find what i was looking for so is this about right.

Don’t need to rotate the engine or try to set preload with the adjustable pushrods in it. Here’s how I do it.
Rotate whatever cylinder you’re working on to TDC compression.
Install everything. Set the adjuster on the rocker where you want it, (IE 2-3 threads showing underneath) then adjust the length checking pushrods to zero lash. Take the pushrods out and measure them. Add whatever preload you want to the measurement and order that length.

ok i found total length of 7.375. so what's an acceptable preload. i have read it could be as i high as .090

Depends on what the manufacturer calls for. Comp calls for .040-.060 preload. Check with the lifter manufacturer.
