I have 225/6 in my 71 Scamp (daily driver) and understand that this motor has a longer stroke and thus more tourque. I would like to get more low end performance and sill have decent highway car. I am wondering if changing the stock rear end gears in a 7 1/4 is possible and if so what gear should I use. I am not even sure what the stock ratio is for a 1971 w a 7 1/4 rear. How do I identify this? Any thoughts?

Look at the cover on the rearend for a tag. If it is still there it will have the ratio on it. If you change the gears to get more torque on the low end then you will make your gas mileage fall on the top end.

Mine had the tag. I have a "sure grip", and the tag said 2:76. I am thinking of moving to 3:55's. Will give some more take off difference.
