Rear Main seal Install

I’ve had trouble over the years with a leaking rear main seal, and I’ve often wondered if I misunderstood the instructions of what “large sealing lip” actually is regarding the seal. Can someone enlighten me on which is the correct way to install this felpro seal.

The side in the second photo goes toward the inside of the engine. The ‘lip’ faces in.
Make sure the ends of the seal don’t protrude out of the block and cap too far. If they do, the seal will go egg shaped as the cap is torqued down.

I usually do a test fit without the crank in first, check the seal size & shape with a snap gauge set to the crank seal journal diameter. Check the size all the way around the seal, make sure the snap gauge touches all the way around, if there’s any gap it will leak.
