I got a replacement rear main seal in the gasket kit that I bought for my 318 and was wondering if it would be a good idea to replace that while the oil pan and oil pump are off the engine. However I am not sure if I need any special tools or if I might mess up a the rear main bearing or something when I unbolt the main cap. Should I just leave it, as it didn't leak before, or should I swap it now?

you know the rear main seal is under the rear main cap right? and under the crank?

Yeah, that's what I was asking. Can't you pull the bottom half from under the crank though? I'm just worried about messing up the bearings or something.

If it has a rubber seal in there now, which it likely does, it will be easy to remove the old one. The upper half in the block, just push on one side and then the other side will pop out. Grab it and pull it out. Put a thin film of RTV between block and cap to prevent it from leaking. Not very hard to do at all.
