Im swapping axles so while the rear end is opened up I thought I would check and see if there was anything that should be checked with the cone style sure grip? Should it be rebuilt, cleaned up?

Pull the cones out and see if they bottomed out in the carrier,if not reassemble.

If they bottomed out machine about .030 off the end and reassemble wit a .030 shim on the back side.I have done a few this way with no problems.:D

They can't really be rebuilt but you can machine the ends down like Bronzebee said. When you reassemble it coat the cones with gear lube and don't forget to use a set of axles to align the 2 side gears before you tighten down the case bolts (which btw, are left hand threads in case you didn't know) or you'll have one heck of a time getting the axles back in.

or call dr diff

X2 , just bought a brand new clutch style from Cass $385. If you are going to go that far into it that's the way to go, cone style is not really made to be rebuildable, I'm sure you could machine it, but its just a matter of time before it's going to be junk. Just my opinion .

385 for new. Good deal I can't get one for under 6. Clutch or truetrac posi is the way to go though!!

I'm in the middle of doing this as well. Dr Diff recommended milling .040" off the bottom of the cones and using a .030" shim between the gear and the cone. He sells a kit that includes the 2 shims and 2 new cupped washers that go on the outside of the spider gear.

What did he charge you for that kit?

To be honest, I can't recall, because I ordered it with a bunch of other stuff. It's just two shims and two cupped washers/shim things. I can try to find the receipt tonight if you'd like. Your best bet is to give him a call- 406-883-4772.

You may even be able to find shims at mcmaster.com.

No problem, just wondered if you knew right off hand. Don't worry about looking I'll give Cass a call. I have some shims, just no cupped washers for the spider gears. Thanks

I know this is not the most desirable of the sure grip, but for now its going to have to stay in the car. I've spent way to much money on my car already. Especially with the bottom end of my engine taking a dump! From what I can tell the unit works great. If anything how can you tell that its on its way out or may need a rebuilding???

I just looked and it was $15. Came with 2 cupped washers and 2 .030" shims.

Their not the most desirable since their not rebuildable but they are just fine for most applications IMO. Heck, I've got a buddy that uses the very 1st one I machined and shimmed several yrs. ago in his mid 11 sec. Cuda that hooks fine.

Like bronzebee said, pull the cones out and see if their bottomed out. If so you can machine .030-.040 off the edge and shim it up so the sides will grip good again and it'll be usable for quite a while.

straightline,if you want help i can see what i can do if you can haul it to Hopkins.I work at a shop on the other side of town if that helps.

Awesome, thank you kind sir! I will be heading up North this weekend and pulling it, I hope! If I get it pulled I'll probably bring it back with me. I'll keep you posted! Thanks again for offering to help.
