Recent vs New

What's the difference between "Recent Posts" and "New Posts"? I see the same thing sometimes when clicking on either selection, whether or not they are new or have numerous replies.

New is all threads posted or updated since the last time you viewed them (or never viewed)

Recent is all threads recently posted
