I'm removing the column from my 68 B'cuda. Everything is loose except the lower coupling just above the steering box. I just wanted to know - does the pin locking the coupling onto the box shaft screw out or drive out? Manual steering and auto column.
Thanks - Jim

It's a roll pin. Use a 1/4" punch and hammer to drive it out.

We're doing this today. Didn't have anything long enough and the right size to tap it out. Got the longest bosch-brand drill "bit" at Lowes so that we could drive it out from underneath. I suppose I can use that drill bit for something else at some point.

Now we are trying to figure out how to remove said column (with column auto shift) and are now headed down the path of removing the steering wheel, and might as well replace the ignition switch, etc. while we are in there.

are you wanting to remove or pull back the column? if you are removing, take the plastic cover from beneath the column down,(4 screws) that will expose the column support bracket. a steel platform that the column is secured to via 4 very short 5/16 screws, leave those alone. you'll see three plastic slotted insulators. they'll have some large diameter beveled washers. those are what you wanna take down. (2 studs one screw) then there are 3 screws on the firewall. before removing them , remove the cotter pin or R clip. on the shift linkage. now pull your last 3 screws from.the firewall. lay your column on the seat, now you can access all your electric connectors.
with your column down n out of the way, you can do any gauge cluster work youve been puttin off , cuz this is a pain in the *** so might as well make the most of it.

Thanks - I was trying to figure out how to disconnect the shift linkage but couldn't see the cotter pin. We got stuck in a few places until I found Joe's write-up:

We're on work stoppage until I get the column pin removal tool.

You're right though - one thing leads to another but it is better than doing it multiple times.
