Hey guys, new here and been lurking for the past day or two.
I was wondering if anyone could direct me toward a thread or site that has a comprehensive breakdown of casting numbers, comb.chamber sizes, int.and exh. valve sizes of all small mopar heads(273-360 A,LA...magnum too)....I'm behind the curve on early dodge stuff so an education is extremely appreciated.

thanks in advance....

How about searching for mopar cylinder head casting #s on your favorite search engine? I have found that information before by doing this.

ok great, got any numbers?...when is say I'm behind the curve I mean I been spending all my time and money on fords up until last week...once again any help appreciated and that was appreciated....

I have a set of 915 "J" heads on my 340. It should have "X" heads but they were long gone when I got the car the short block was in.

X heads have 2.02/1.60

J heads had 1.88/160 (I think) but I had mine opened up and 2.02 installed with hardened seats

don't know much more than that. The 340 had a small chamber

I have been told that 340 heads may cause the valves to hit on a 273 or 318

If you are getting heads and can afford them get some Edelbrock aluminum and skip the stock cast heads

1970 TA heads are different than other LA heads and Magnum heads are totally different in rocker design and intake bolt pattern but will interchange on an LA block

That is all I know

Thanks alot guys, yeah I've been to allpar....thed thing was I don't know casting numbers and the differences, and applications to find them in....I'm basically looking for something good to port. thanks again this is a good start for me.

Casting ends with :

894 - X heads
915 - J head, may have an O, U, J cast in them
587 - 73 340-360

Those are all good heads to start with.

Here's your dilemna. If you spend money on porting, valve job, guides, hardened seat, surface/milling, you'll be in for a bit of cash. Might be smarter to bite the bullet for a bit more, and go to an Edelbrock head. It'll also give you some room to grow later on. Most ported SB heads aren't much better than a stock OOTB Edelbrock.

Just something to think about.
