Has anybody here changed the input shaft seal on a power steering box in the car? Mine was leaking bad and I was going to get a rebuild kit, pull the box and rebuild it. Well I went to the Indy swap meet and bought a box from a guy that said it didn't leak and hadn't been long since it was rebuilt. It was spotless clean so I took his word for it. Well I spent 6 hrs. changing the box out cause I had to practically dismantle the whole front end to get it out. Headers also made it worse. Got the new one in and it leaks too. Friggin great!!!

I didn't put the steering column in yet cause I thought I'd fire it up and check for leaks first. In the factory service manual they show a tool made to remove the seal in the car but I've searched high and low and can't find one which doesn't surprise me cause it was one of those specialty Miller tools made just for this. I can still get at it fairly decent since the steering column is out so the only idea I have is to drill a small hole in the metal part of the seal and screw in a sheet metal screw and see if I can pull it out. Anybody got any other ideas?

Fishy 68, I use to work at a shop years ago and we did all the mecanic work for Hilborough county sheriff. 71-74 Coronets. I use to do them in the car all the time. Since you still have the column out ,it is a piece of cake. The only tool you need is a small flat head screw driver. I use to shapen it on a bench grinder and drive it in between the housing and the seal, at an angle that you are tapping on the seal part more than the housing. The seal will bend easy and you just pry it out. The new just drives in using a socket a little smaller than the outer diameter of the seal. it's really easy to do.

You may even want to practice on your old PS box. The seal is made like a small front wheel seal. You want to get past the top edge and then the bottom part of the seal will pry in easy.
