i am in the process of timing my 318. i having trouble getting the timing at 10*btdc. it seems like when the timing mark even gets close to the gauge on the block, it stalls. anyone know why this might happen, or how to fix it??

isn't it supposed to be 34-36* tdc? And I also think it's checked with the vacuum advance line disconnected and plugged from the dizzy. I might be wrong but I think 10* is too early

Carb may have been adjusted with timing way off.idled down to keep motor from racing with too much advance. is motor old or new are you sure tab is correct for motor. positive damper is dead on tdc?too many ifs ,we need more info

Actually, 34-36* is more or less the target total advance number. When he speaks of 10*, he means initial timing. A near stock 318 will like around 10* btdc, while a warmed 318 will like anywhere from 13-15.

I would say that his dampner may be spun, giving false timing numbers.

what is tab? motor is used with 52k. the motor supposedly ran good with the carb set up as is. not sure on the damper.

what is this total timing thing??

Some have tabs to align timing on damper, while others have the timing marks on the timing chain cover. To tell on damper you need a dial indicator and you remove number 1 plug and bring piston to top on compression strokeand find center of spot where piston moves up or down by rotating by hand and check to see that damper is lined up with 0 timing mark. Once performance mods are made tho stock timing is out the window. At that point total timing like they sat of 32 to 36 will probably be best. I time mine by advancing distributor with foot on gas and brake idled up till it rattles and back it off just a smudge till I get no rattle and lock it down. One last thought. old gas is hard to burn has car been sitting.

car has sat for 3 months. i just put 5 gal of fresh gas in and thats about all it has in it, so id say that is good. would spark plug wire orientation on the cap have any affect on this??

not as long as order is right. if two are crossed that would be your problem order is 18436572 clockwise and many caps have no1 marked if motor has been sitting maybe some valves are sticking. run a cup of trans fluid in your gas to lube the top end up
