I just fired up my 64' wagon after having everything apart for a fresh'n up session. The motor was rebuilt years ago but had low miles so it only received paint and a gasket set. Now with the new headers and exhaust ran I started setting the timing. I disconnected the vacuum advance and set the timing at 8*. The car responses well (on the rack) and starts easily with a nice little lope. When I reconnect the vacuum advance the car fails on it's face. R%esponses well to full thottle but spits and tries to die at part thottle. If I plug the vacuum advance it seems to run well no matter how much thottle I give it.
Where should I start? Bad Vaccum advance can?

Sounds like a bad pick-up coil.

mine did the same thing...exact same thing.....I tried everything under the sun and finally just left the advance hose plugged

I am heading the same direction Waggin! Had me stumped for a little bit but hell, it runs damn good with the vaccum line plugged! I will have to take it off the blocks and put her on the street and see how she acts.

Vacuum advance unit on dist is leaking. Will cause a flat spot or stumble at part throttle. Replace the advance unit.

is the vacuum advance unit hooked up to the correct port on the Carb? It should have no vacuum advance at idle and only add timing when the throttle body opens. (put it on the port above the throttle blades, not direct manifold vacuum. Is your vacuum advance canister adjustable?

The funny part is, I changed nothing. The vaccum line goes to the same place it has always been and I made no changes to the Dizzy. I guess I am going to assume that the canister is leaking and replace it. It might give me a good excuse to switch to a electronic dizzy!
