Attempting to straighten out the bomb drop zone...aka the garage. Hoping to get started on my smoker and bike projects soon. Pulled out and separated the pile metal. Have a whole pile of odd shaped pieces of plate. Want to cut them into chunks for practicing with the Tig some year. Any suggestions on size? Hope I have a good tip or 2 for the plasma cutter...

In the welding classes I've taken, we use 2" x 4"

Also for tig cleanliness is essential.

Joe Dokes

Some of the metal has some minor surface rust. Quick pass or two with a wheel on the angle grinder gets rid of it.

Kind of like riding a bike once you got it down.
Not getting in a hurry and keeping it clean is key.
Probably the hardest part is not dipping your tungsten. Kind of like threading a needle during the entire weld. Learn on steel and progress to aluminum
Is what worked best for me.
It is closely related to oxy acetylene gas welding as far as technique. Requires a close eye.
