Location
jerseyville, illinois.
Going to look at a few trade parts tomorrow. The guy says he has an 8 3/4, original a body he says, that was narrowed 1 in on each side. So instead of 52 5/8, it is 50 5/8. He also has moser axles w/green brgs and 3" screw in studs.
#1-what is it worth, dollar wise?
#2- why would someone only narrow a rear axle 1 in per side?
Pics tomorrow after i get there to look at it, but a rough idea is what i need now, if possible.

sounds like one that came from one of the "Duke Boys" way back when. Are the spring mounting pads in stock location or have they been moved inward to use the SS offset front hangers and "twisted" shackles?

i recently sold a complete small bolt unit drum to drum standard axle, 489 case, 3.23 open with shock plates and e-brake cables that i did new seals, gaskets and brakes w/ hardware on for $1750

so with the one you're looking at being modified i'd say something like a smooth grand would be my number depending on what all is with it.

Here it is. Pretty sure an "a" housing by the way the ends are welded close to the pads. Weld jod, I would not think wwould be a moser job. 50 5/8 in che on the noise and spring pads 43.00 inches. Brand new axles, w/green bearings, flanges etc. Does not have the backing plate studs in the housing ends.

axles & housing only? 4~600

keep in mind that the shortness may preclude you from running certain rims or cause fitment issues wrt the spring

Who'da ever thunk they'd bring that much. I remember about 1995, I rode out to the county I now live in to see a friend and paid 75 bucks for a complete, drum to drum (big bell drums) with a 8 3/4 742 case. He didn't know what was in there internally. I got it home and it had a Dana Powerlock clutch type sure grip and 4.10 gears. For less than a hun.

 We were workin' on Moto's '66 GT. His right leg was in a cast from the tips of his toes to his dangly bits due to a motorcicle accident. He was standing in the shop at his workplace and an acquaintance of our "accidentally" got him in the leg with the foot peg on the scooter he was ridin'. The '66 already had a 340 we had put in it, needed more rear end. Local salvage yard we find an 8 3/4 and it's marked "LOCKED" :wtf: . I get the tape measure out, right width, put it up on some old wheels and spin an axle, no noise or grinding, both axles turn same direction :). I make some marks and count revolutions, :D somewhere near 4.0. Pulled fill plug to look at the oil, no sparkly bits. Throw it in the back of the Piglet and head for the office. Cashier sees it, "Oh, that's LOCKED. $35 and it's yours." We hurried back to the house before he changed his mind
