I finally got a chance to see that "426 hemi" out of a tow truck. It was a hemi all right, a 331 hemi and siezed solid. couldn't get a good look at the tranny. It was a four speed though. The dana 60 rear ended up being a 8.75". I couldn't tell if it was a 741,742 or 489 it was buried so deep. He is going to get at it this weekend and let me know the measurements on it.

All of this was in an old stock car from years past. It looked like about a 56 Plymouth. The guy that had run it had done some creative engineering that was for sure. It had the front end out of some kind of truck, the rear has six shocks mounted at various angles and a roll cage that you could go over Niagra Falls in and not get a scratch.

All in all, another wid goose chase.

There is a place that advertises in the mopar magazines that make new parts for those old Hemi's not sure if there worth while building or not.

The 56 Plymouth you described sounds like it may have been an old dirt track car.There's a very old junkyard i go to that has a 30's Plymouth coupe that was a dirt track car.Not much left of it,some of the body and frame still has the roll cage and the doors are welded shut.The drivers door window is cut round for the driver to get in and out of.

It's not worth while to me. It would be a major pain to get that engine apart. As far as i'm concerned, that engine is dead.

A lot of these quests turn out to be dead ends or large variations on what you were lead to believe. However don't discount all of them. Every once in a while one pays off.

Yep, that's what I'm finding. About 1 in 20 you hit paydirt and that makes it all worth while.

Well one lead saw me getting a 1968 Hemi ragtop Coronet R/T. That one was in 1974. Another got me a complete 392 for $25. Now the last one I've been chasing is a 1969 Hemi Super Bee in a garage a place about one hour from me. I've been chasing it for three years and no paydirt yet.
