Gonna start my engine and break in the cam this Saturday!
Prepping to first start up, brand new (rebuilt Summit) Thermoquad...I was advised to fill the bowl ahead of time through the vent tube.
Stupid question, but the vent tube is the tube in the FRONT of this picture - yes?

About how much gas should I put in it? I don't want to overfill it....

Jeff

I use one of those small Sriracha sauce bottles and it will usually take all of it without spilling over.

LOL....cool
Through any of the tubes on top huh?

And if it did overfill...????

Jeff

From what I gather you want to prefill the fuel bowls so it's ready when you fire it up? The two tubes in the back should be your fuel bowl vent tubes, I would say those are where you want to pour.

I just pour a little gas down the carb throat when trying to start it dry...

Two or three times and it will prime the fuel pump if it doesn't start before that and run on its own...

If it did over fill it wouldn't be by much as slow as you are putting the fuel in. You will see it start to come out the boosters if you over fill it so just stop. It would be about like pumping it a few times.

OK....thanks guys.....guess it's not too bad...!
Saturday is the day.....!

the fuel bowls are outboard of the venturi and cross over in the back. That's where I'd fill it. Some tq didnt have the front stack but it looks like another vent tube by the way the fuel bowl is shaped.

The tube on the side is for the charcoal canister and is a vent tube that isn't always open.

The twin tubes in the back are the one you want to fill the carb with. Just a few ounces is all it needs.

Work the accelerator pump shot until it shoots a steady stream of fuel.

Since I also have a brand new gas tank installed, should I try to fill the empty fuel line or will the gas in the carb keep it running long enough for the fuel pump to start pumping gas? Or should I prime the fuel pump?

I don't want to run out out gas while I'm trying to break in the cam...

Good question I can not answer due to fuel pump capabilities unknown. A stock pump in good shape "should" be fine.
If there is any doubt, run a rubber hose to a fuel container.

That sounds like the best answer....at least until the cam is broke in....
Thanks!

Jeff

I have used a 5 gallon gas can to do this in the past. You will be pouring in a lot of it into the tank after cam break in.

Ya....I feel a lot better going with a gas can/rubber hose.....I'll keep a fire extinguisher handy too!
New fuel tank is awesome but presented a concern to me about getting fuel up there!

I pour some gas into an old jar, then pour a little down the carb with the throttle blades held open, then crank it over...

It will kick over and run for a few seconds and then die...

Pour a little more gas down the carb, and fire it up again and then die after a few seconds...

Usually the third try will get everything primed and you won't need to pour gas down the carb anymore, the accelerator pumps should be squirting gas now...

pour fuel in tank, attach redneck credit card with siphon ball to engine fuel feed line to purge the line.
