Dipstick won't go back in

Add beer to the equation.
What was the level on the stick when you pulled it?
Can you SEE the tube all the way into the block?
It was at the full mark.
Yes, I can see the tube enter the block. Pretty much looks like the tube is properly seated.

do stock type 340 pans have baffles? how far in are you able to get it? I have found on more than one occasion that the lead edge of the dipstick can catch on the edges of a baffle.

Steve, you thinking the dipstick is hitting the crank?
Remember, I wrote above that I am able to insert a plastic rod that is almost the same length as dipstick without any problem.

does the tip have a mostly squared tip? if so, maybe try filing the corners off of it - round off the tip

hahaha

Yes there was a post here recently where dipstick was hitting crank. Anything's possible? ?
This the 1st time you pulled it out?
wasn't that a stroker crank that actually ate part of the dipstick?

if the rod goes in fine, I would just cut the bottom half of the dipstick off, then cut off the same length of the rod and ducktape that to the remainder of the dipstick and run it (well, I would if it was a chevy)

Since it would be so easy I'll let it go. :D

Just pull the dang tube, kick it's *** and put it back in.
Show it who's boss.
wow! a lot of remarks , but no help, even tho some were funny as h--l. bend the dipstick w/ pliers a hair toward the inside of the engine. does it have a windage tray in it? could be hanging up on it, a stud girdle, or even the pan gasket.---ask me how I know !

I believe all 340 LA motors had windage trays. I did not rebuild motor, so can't say for sure if mine has one or not.
The mystery is how I can insert a plastic rod and it goes in smoothly without hanging up. Makes no sense,
and it seems this will remain a mystery.
I appreciate all the input.

Maybe it's the width of the stick that keeps hitting and the round stick is enough to get by the obstruction...

Could the tube be crushed at the base???

Just a thought here.... could it be the handle end of the dipstick is catching on the top of the tube, as opposed to the tp getting hung up at the bottom?

pull the dipsticks out of your daily driver, your buddies car...whatever you have access to. see if any of them go all the way in.
you're clearly hitting a shelf on the block, or the tube isn't seated all the way. something. if one of the other sticks go in...make yours look like that. (angle, edge sharpness or roundness) etc.

hard to believe a stock 40 year old dipstick, in a stock 40 year old pan, in a stock tube...is "all of a sudden" not going back in. your previous owner either knew something was up...or...after dealing with this himself for so many years, figured out the correct amount of "holy hell" to give that thing to ram it home.

The guy you got it from put it in, you saw it in, so we know it fits. I've had dipsticks in some cars that had to be rotated as the dipstick was inserted, or there would be a catch. I don't know where else to go with this.......

The handle doesn't even get close to the tube. Dipstick goes in a bit over halfway and then stops.

Once it goes in a few inches, there is no way to rotate.

All I can say is if it was mine Ida smashed the ever loving **** outta something by now. As I told her. I got it in once its going in again...you just pick the hole

any chance one of your fun loving mopar friends swapped the oil dipstick with the transmission fluid dipstick and is now hiding behind a dart swinger laughing his tail end off?

just ran into same sort of issue, swapping from 318 to 360, pulled chromeMP dipstick from 318, would not go into 360, turning crank on engine stand no go, grabbed old truck 360 dipstick i use for lining up pushrods, slid right in there! the truck one has pointier end, by my old eyes it not as thick or as wide as the chrome one.food for thought anyway

I can't take it anymore....
