    Magnum swap accessories question

An apology if this has been addressed elsewhere. I am swapping a ’99 5.2L (from a Ram 1500) into a ’73 duster and will be keeping the serpentine accessory belt system. I have the brackets for alternator and power steering pump (I will use the A/C bypass) which I got through a local salvage...

    Radiator Woes

Hello, Returning to the forums after a long absence. This has probably been posted before but here goes. I own a '73 Duster with a stock 225 w/86000 (probably 186000) on the odometer. I'm on a tight budget but the radiator is shot and I want to get the car up and running - the situation is...

    Headers vs. manifolds

Thank you to all who responded! For Rumblefish360; engine is a ’99 5.2L Magnum. Block is bored over 0.03” with a higher duration cam (duration @ 0.05 216 intake/224 exhaust), hypereutectic pistons, heavier (LS1) valve springs, and double timing chain. Intake is a Edelbrock Performer air-gap...

    Headers vs. manifolds

Greetings! Haven't been back here for a long time (illness, job hunting, life). Have a question on my '73 Duster project. Engine will be a warmed-over 5.2L Magnum, question: what should I run for exhaust? I've heard the stock manifolds will not fit the A-Body engine bay without "persuasion"...

    And the Winner is…Carter!

Greetings, I have settled on a 625cfm Carter AFB after my last posting. Thanks to all who responded! I have a couple questions on the carburetor itself. Will I be able to use any AFB, or do I need to find a Model 9626/9636 which was intended specifically for Mopars? Second, my intake...

    Carter, Edelbrock, or Holley?

Greetings, I am finally returning to my project after an extended period of unemployment. It is a ’73 Plymouth Gold Duster resto-mod. Power plant is a warmed over ’99 5.2L Magnum. Block is bored over 0.03” with a higher duration cam (duration @ 0.05 216 intake/224 exhaust), hypereutectic...

Foreign valve springs in a Magnum

You are quite correct - I probably would have ran into the same issue with the Harland Sharp's. I know better now - thanks to all who replied. It's great to have a resource like this forum in order to successfully complete my project (my first, by the way). The reason I was looking at the...

Foreign valve springs in a Magnum

This was a custom grind camshaft done by a cam shop here in Washington. The specs were provided in a conversation with a Comp Cams tech a few months ago. Although when I check out the cam you mentioned, the specs are very similar.

Foreign valve springs in a Magnum

This is a '99 5.2L Magnum bored 0.30 over stock. Cam is 216/224 duration @ 50, lift is .506 The pushrods were not custom length - I was advised that stock length Magnum replacement pushrods (ie MP P5249662) would work.

Foreign valve springs in a Magnum

Yes, that's them. I'm now concerned that I may have over-torqued some of the other bolts as well - should I bite the bullet and order new sets? I'm wondering if this is a sign that I should have gone with Harland-Sharp roller rockers? What does everyone think?

Foreign valve springs in a Magnum

Well, both books referenced above were somewhat vague about this whole valve lash thing. It was implied that once the rockers were installed and torqued, then the lash is adjusted. However, I may have mis-read the section. Live and learn, I guess. So, overall, using the "foreign" LS1 springs...

Foreign valve springs in a Magnum

They were stock OEM replacement heads. Wish the author had been a little clearer on this whole valve lash thing. I'm a newbee to rebuilding motors and also on a budget and bought those books in an effort to avoid making a mistake! Live and learn, I quess. Hughes Engines a good outfit to...

Foreign valve springs in a Magnum

Thanks for replying, As far as I know, those were the stock OEM bolts for the Mopar Performance P4876050 rocker arm set. I should clarify, the bolt didn't fail while I was torqueing it down, but rather while trying to adjust the valve lash - which was recommended by both "How to Rebuild your...

Foreign valve springs in a Magnum

Help! I am worked through my first resto-mod project – a 1973 Plymouth Duster and have hit a snag. I had to purchase new heads for my chosen power plant – a 5.2L Magnum bored 0.30 over, balanced and with a hotter cam (216/224 duration @ 50, 0.506 lift) – and the local engine shop suggested...

    Edelbrock air-gap clearance

Thanks everyone for their input! It sound's like I'll get away with keeping my stock hood if I go with a low profile dropped base air cleaner. What would you suggest?

    Edelbrock air-gap clearance

Hello, I just purchased an Edelbrock Performer RPM Air-Gap intake for my mildly built 5.2L Magnum. Not sure what carb I'll be running, but was wondering if there will be any clearance issues under the hood of my '73 Duster. I will use a twin-snorkle scoop if necessary, but would perfer to keep...

    Overdrive tranny in an A-body

Hello, I am considering installing an A-500/518 overdrive transmission in my '73 Duster which will be getting a 5.2L Magnum soon. Has anyone out there performed this swap ('70-'76 A-body)? How much floorpan modification is involved? Is this even doable? This would replace the current 6cyl...

    Post rebuild engine priming question

Hello, I am in the process of rebuilding a mild 5.2L Magnum. As this is the first time doing anything like this I have a question not addressed in any of the rebuilding manuals I have. Once the engine is reassembled, how do you prime the motor without removing the distributor intermediate...

    Camshaft install & timing set

Hello, I am building my first engine - a 0.030 over 5.2L Magnum and have a question. When installing the timing set (Mopar Performance double-roller), are there any additional considerations other than insuring that the dots line up on the crank and cam sprockets? They appear to go on only...

I used to hate Demons and Dusters

Hello, I am new to this forum, but had to get my two cents in... I have owned three A-bodies over the years, a '72 Swinger, '73 Scamp, and my current A-body (and the first one I'm resto-moding), a '73 Gold Duster. I have always liked the looks of these cars - particularly Dusters and 2nd...

    Lockup vs. Non-lockup Torqueflites

Hello! I am new to this board and am looking for some insight... I am resto-moding a '73 Gold Duster and am currently building up a mild 5.2L Magnum for it. I have not yet picked up a tranny and am uncertain if a lockup or non-lockup A904 Torqueflite would be better. I have heard that...
