I also tried to get 0 vacuum at idle and found that without modification it is not likely. any vacuum up until the vacuum advance starts to pull in additional timing will not effect idle. Most guys here will advise you to get the max vacuum at the manifold (ie. pcv port) for idle timing. then...
Well a lumpy cam comes with a price. Is this a manual or automatic transmission application? You will need torque right away (360 is an excellent sb choice). Comp makes the thumper cam which gives a rough/radical idle AND great off idle response. You will be limited to around 6k RPM with...
Have you checked to see if there is a fuel stream when opening the throttle by looking down the carb bore? Accelerator pump adjustment (or choke is not open) is most likely if you can eventually get it to giddyup and go all the way to it's top end. extreme advance on the timing would more...
If you move the throttle open a little how much vacuum does it pull then? The port you are using is mostly blocked off with the throttle closed. 15 in hg = about 50 kPa. No load needed to set base timing "by the book" I don't use base timing but rather total mechanical advance. No vacuum...
Vacuum readings are more likely to be in the 16-20 inches mercury range taken at the manifold. Where are you Getting 2psi pressure from?
sounds like plugged exhaust.
Check you float level. Sounds like a fuel "pressure" problem. Meaning that the amount of fuel is not being delivered in a consistent manor due to atmosphere (engine vacuum) vs. fuel level in the bowl over the jet(s) is not correct. Also you should prob have cleared the fuel line when...
my experiance with the J heads and low compression has been they like a lot of lift. If you can live with lower RPM an RV cam will rip the wheels off just about anything. (ours was an 87 conversion van!) Fuel economy suffers though. But I'm with CS on that one. LOL
rocker assemblies appear to be interchangable. will need to check push rod length however if you want correct valve train geometry. (a little time now saves time and money later). ;)
Skimmed over most posts so far. Didn't see any valve train geometry comments. make sure you check pushrod length if any material is shaved off of the heads or block, or if you use a thinner head gasket. A solid lifter and an adjustable pushrod go a long ways toward reliable and durable...
does it have a windage tray. (e58 package) Maybe Truck engine (little red express). I built a similar engine with J heads, 340 4bbl cam. Tq MONSTER! If you want info on my combo let me know. 18MPG and 345 hp at rear wheels! Fun, Fun, Fun!
