5 quick operation and Maintenance Qs

I agree the fuel economy drop is too much. I run 18 mpg pretty much all the time. Your diff can not "slip", it is just 2 gears (pretty much), but it can wear out. If that were the case you would hear a considerable amount of noise from the back of the car. The torque converter can slip (and...

May need more fuel yet, you have had the head shaved for the valve job. Who knows what else has been done to the block and head in the past. If the exhaust has been modified larger than stock it'll need more fuel and your intake (air horn/filter) has plenty of flow. I'd try a 61 or even a 62...

Well I trust SlantSixDan and his OE number on the tread I read was 058. Maybe get one size larger for ethanol blended fuel. Yours may have been for a feather duster or something like that. .054 seems common on some 1920s for economy, doesn't really work for higher speeds and blended fuel is...

A torch cleaning file set is cheap. find the closest one that fits and gently polish the inside of the opening. Otherwise a very small pipe cleaner with cleaner, like paint thinner. I'll set up shipping the fan for tuesday next, I'll be off and can get to the post office while they are...

The HEAT Demons are trying to get out! LOL :evil2: The fan you can have for $25 and the price of shipping. It has seven blades with varied spacing. Spacer and bolts included. A 1976 225 /6 with shroud and A/C is what it came off of. Like this one...

Timing seems to be a non issue at this point. Still seems lean. Did you ever put vacuum to the vacuum advance with a hand vacuum pump to see if it holds. Should not leak down at all. I know you checked but worth one more good look over for ANY vacuum leaking. Including the choke pull off...

Well my experience with temp guns has been they are very close to the PCM temp in a OBDII vehicle. I use the Scan tool and a temp gun to verify readings are correct in cases where a fan is not functioning properly or the gauge is reading something other than normal. Your gauge "should" read...

    Query re engine cooling

I've found an open element air cleaner over the headers is source of elevated engine temps. Could try bringing in some cool air for the carb. Won't hurt performance either. Wont keep the temp down forever in traffic but it helps if you're close to being able to control it. And if you haven't...

Yeah the vacuum diaphragm will have a hex shape just behind the vacuum port if it is adjustable. Spark "Knock" will be most noticeable after the curve, meaning when most if not all of the timing is in under WOT and driving. I don't get any until 3500 in second WOT with 30-32 degrees. I also...

5 quick operation and Maintenance Qs

Yeah 48 is TOO high for mechanical advance. You should be hearing a bit of pre ignition under WOT. Mine likes 28 with regular unleaded. See how much more you get at idle with the vacuum advance connected to the PCV vacuum port. This will give you full vacuum advance so you can see how many...

Temp gun is $20 at local hobby shop or walmart, maybe cheaper at Harbour freight. If you could use one and "Confirm" the coolant is too hot, over the thermostat temp at the top hose. I know you have put in a different temp gauge. just a suggestion. Did you happen to check/verify the oil...

I wonder, is the bottom end hydraulic? (probably not but was wondering) what did the lifter look like? was there a spring clip on top? or just a solid machined piece? my lifters are not audible at all cold or warm with the valve cover on. I also noticed you have no snorkel so that idea is...

5 quick operation and Maintenance Qs

Read the whole thread again. Notes- 1. You "richened the carb a bit", if you are talking about the idle air adjustment screw it does nothing to add fuel in cruise or power mode. Would require jet or metering rod change for that. 2. I need to check on the head pictures, I bought my 76 with the...

5 quick operation and Maintenance Qs

3500 RPM is pushing. Now that you know your timing is looking good without the vacuum advance, do you get any more advance with the vacuum hooked up? If not your vacuum diaphragm is done and needs to be replaced. I run around 3K on the highway maybe push to 3200 if I wanna keep up at 80...

x2 ESP47. running adjustment is the way to go. way easier than u would think. Did adjustments both ways, and valves were very tight done "Hot not Running", actually had a slightly lopey idle, but never had an over heating issue.

Nice Job on the floor pans! Did you use something to seal inside the u channels? just wondering what is a good way to keep 'em from rotting out. Awesome thread by the way about Boosting the /6! Love it. Got my little 225 running smooth as glass and super fun to "pull away" off the line but...

Initial timing is not as important as "mechanical" total timing. with the engine at operating temp disconnect the vacuum advance and plug the port/hose. check and write down the timing. then lower the idle to see if it goes any lower and write down the lowest number you get. now slowly bring...

5 quick operation and Maintenance Qs

I see you timed the engine at 30 degrees BTDC "under vacuum". Did you not unhook the vacuum advance? The timing when fully mechanically advanced should be 30 degrees at or slightly before 3000 RPM. That means no vacuum advance is hooked up. The vacuum advance should only be hooked up after...

Been reading a lot of post the last couple of days trying to figure out running issues. I started with a Vacuum gauge and looked at this site http://www.secondchancegarage.com/public/186.cfm. Found 2 problems right off the bat! Valves too tight and Timing was late. My idle is now smooth as...
