Here in the next few months I am planning to build a 360 for a weekend warrior hot rod, & I've been doing homework & will continue doing homework on the engine/torque converter/transmission/rear end combo I am going to put into this car. I want it to be very streetable but give a good show at the strip occasionally.

I'd like hear engine recipes from guys who have built or had someone build a hot 360 for their hot rods.

Let's have fun with this thread, & go from mild to wild. If you built it, love it, kick some serious tail with it, & would like to share your engine recipe, please share.

Thanks,
Rob

Reworked X/J heads.2.02/1.60 with bowl work.Rpm performer air gap/750 Carb.Crower 269/282 cam(223/[email protected],112 centerlines) 0 decked block,flattop pistons.Combo runs high to mid 12s.Mileage mid teens to low 20s.Nice,slightly rumpy idle @ 850 in drive,about 380 to 400 h.p.

With a bazillion threads on 360 combo's here..........

360 @ .030, Zero deck height KB-107 slugs;

2.02/1.60 J heads, comp valve job, 750 AFB, Torquer II 360, MP 292/.509 cam, super comp headers into 2-1/2 exhaust, 4spd, 4.10 gears on 93 pump gas ran mid 12's.

Same short block as above with a RPM Air-Gap, Edelbrock heads ran low 12's.

Now running a solid Comp cam @ 296/.525 lift on a 110. I have not run it at the track as of yet. It feels very nice and strong with a good bit more upper RPM power and more RPM's to it. IMO, it should turn high 11's without a problem.

A more streetable combo I have done in the past was;

A 9-1, 360 with;

A larger TQ, on top of a LD-340, stock heads, 2.02's, and a small Crane cam @ 216/228/.454/.480 lift on a 112. 4spd, 3.23 gears on a stock tire height.

Later, larger cams were installed. A 238 @ 050 w/.497 lift was used. Nice street machine.
A 244 @ 050 w/ .499 lift on a 106. VERY choppy idle, peaky in power. didn't like it much. Nor did the TQ.

Depending on the cars weight and actual target goal, which you did not mention, so were basicly just shooting in the dark here, the lighter the car, the less cam you'll need, the less stall you'll need.

An old MOD here, Mikel Beck had a Duster running low 12's with the above Crane cam I listed in a track only car.

Here are some more combo's for you.

Well here is mine.360 20 over trw flat top pistons,Mp cam 280 474, 340 j heads 202 valves,LD 340 intake,big tube headers,600 holley,have a 750 ready to bolt on soon lol,727 with trans go 2 shift kit with a 2800 stall,323 gear,in my 69 Dart.

Thanks for the replies, & I appreciate the detailed post Rumblefish.

This car weighs 2,535 lbs. with no one in it, & like I mentioned, as far as the transmission & rear end, I'll be building those up at the same time as the motor. Though this is a small block forum, it wouldn't hurt my feelings if someone threw in a tranny & rear gear ratio combo as well, lol.

Thanks again

Snake, what did it run?

I had a buddys slicks.

That makes sense , I can't get a decent time , keep smoking the tires through 1st and part of 2nd before it hooks up . Plus my reaction time is sub tortoise and I just leave it in drive . Trouble is only have one working arm and leg , so I need practice . My best so far is 13.6 @ 105 , oh yeah being an old **** I let off the gas when I see the 1/4 mile marker , I know I should hold it until I pass the marker !
Getting old sucks !!

What's your definition on very streetable? build the engine to suit your car and driving requirements with the occasional strip run I'd go with a nitrous shot to go fast with a mild engine first I'd pick your cruising speed and rpm first, pick a tire and gear combo probably something 26" tire and 3.23:1 gears. For the power band you'll want something like idle-5500 or 1000-6000 with more gear and stall though but I'd go with the first idle-5500 if you want very streetable you'll want 9.1 CR, high lift cam in the 260-270ish range, dual plane even factory one would work if using the eddy performer gotta gasket match port the size inbetween 318 and 360 should gasket match the intake anyway, 650 carb or even stocker, headers and duals of course. Heads stocker will be fine cc the chamber and match and mill to around 68cc to get your 9:1CR with the right piston choice, preformance valve job a little bowl and port clean up gasket match. 360+hp plus 100 shot of nos = fast, fun, reliable and very streetable car.

LOL Streetae for one is "Lame!" whe the other is screaming for Jesus so the Hell ride will
End sooner than the 8.00 claimed E.T. That was set out to be proven to the unbeileveing.

I will call it streetable if it will idle at about 1,000 RPM at a stop light. Doesn't have to be a very smooth idle, would prefer it to be a bit "lopey" at an idle, but still be able to idle & have somewhat decent vacuum while at an idle. Cruising speeds from 45 mph to 90 mph, RPM range from 1,500 to 6,500.

Also, outside of subject, there will be disk brakes at all 4 wheels

instead of very streetable should of been barely streetable ;) awesome that will make your 63 into a rocket well than 11:1, ported eddy heads & intake with a big roller cam.

Great info from 273 and a great combo from Snake. I'm a sucker for that .474 cam, my all time old school favorite for the street.
Reread both of these and remember your still gonna be under 3,000lbs wet with you in it. The above will be plenty fast enough to get you in trouble on the street and be very respectable on the occasional strip night.

My bad. I'm sorry Rob. I didn't mean to slight you or the others. All are good suggestions, i was just trying to highlight some milder thoughts on the subject. I shouldn't have left anyone out.

All different,yet good ways to get to the finish line.In a 2500 lb a body,hauling some serious tail,any combo of these you would choose.

Rick, I have no clue what your talking about. No harm, no foul.

lol guys, thanks. I really think I'm gonna go with number 8 from the Moparts list Rumblefish put in his first post, thanks again for that link by the way. Any thoughts on that setup?

Based off the numbers in pkg.#7 i think they left the 75hp nos shot off the list for Pkg.#8.......lol.

Lol, I'm on the mobile right now but will look at it again when I get home. I do remember them being similar
