Choosing a Cam for a 5.9 Swap

So I emailed Hughes over a week ago and I have gotten no response whatsoever, I may call them this Friday in case my email got lost but so far no response. I talked to a Comp cams rec and they recommended me a custom grind 224/230 duration @ .50" with .512/.512 lift on a 110 LSA, for the price of 365.98. I wanted to see if any of you guys could give me their opinion on this cam since I still got a ton to learn about these engines and what they like. I told them I was looking for something that had some good low-end torque but also could scream to 6000 if I needed to, sort of in-between extremes. the car is a 1973 duster with a 5.9 swap. it has a 3 speed manual with a 3.23 rear end ratio. the 5.9 is getting EQ heads, LA Eddy dual Plane Air gap with a 570cfm Holley street avenger, maybe some pistons but don't know yet but definitely some increase in compression. 28in tire height. it's just a streetcar

if you guys also have any recommendations for a hydraulic roller long snout from other companies or ones you have already tried please let me know since I'm interested in hearing your opinions and experiences.

Sounds like a winner to me. I am running a comp cam with the same lift and 210/220 @ .050 and it runs very good. Should work well with your manual transmission.
 
This is the cam I’m running in the wife’s car. Though not a Magnum build, it is a .030-360/zero slug deck w/Pro Maxx CNC ported heads. Backed by a 904 & 3.55 on 26” tires and custom 2400 stall Pro Torque converter.

It is an excellent street performer that drives easy and runs really well for a small cam engine. I think your on track duration wise according to your description above.
(Though, IMO, your way small on the carb size & your tire is a bit large @ 28”.)

I’ve got almost the exact setup with the exception of the tires and I’m using a Holley 4777. I chose to go with a regrind from Oregon Cam Grinders, I talked to Ken and he suggested their 722 grind which is on a 112 centerline 222/228 with .494/.512 lift. There’s a noticeable lope at idle and it pulls real hard up top. I have this in a 63 Valiant Signet.

Even though it would work better with my 3.23, I want a cam that will work when I upgrade my rear end ratio to a 3.73 or something a little bit higher. I would love to do it right now but one thing at a time for me.

Yeah, this is the carb that I had in my 318, it is slightly on the small side but hopefully, a spacer will make it useable till I get something a little better. Thank you for the information ill go over your cam card later today to make sure I understand everything.

Yeah, im still deciding on the 110 vs 112 LSA but ive been conservative with everything in my car so far so I think ill go a little spicy on the cam. Thanks for the response!

I can certainly relate to one thing at the time. Have you considered calling Ken at Oregon Cam Grinders? They can grind one very similar off your core for like 125 bucks.

Yeah, im gonna call a couple of cam companies soon, I just havent gotten home early enough for any of them to be open. ill send them an email and call them on Friday. Thanks for the recommendation.

Another vote for Oregon Cams. I had a very similar combo to yours. I went with their grind #1357 and loved it. He's doing another for me now for a single turbo 5.9 I'm building.
 
I talked with Ken at Oregon cams and I'm very satisfied with his prices and his expertise. Sadly my cam casting cant be regrinded but he gave me a really reasonable price to make me a billet steel cam with the long snout with the grind I wanted for far cheaper than any of the other cam companies could. Thank you again for the recommendations!
 
Another vote for Oregon Cams. I had a very similar combo to yours. I went with their grind #1357 and loved it. He's doing another for me now for a single turbo 5.9 I'm building.
What stall converter worked for this cam?
