I have a brand new built 340 with maybe 3 hours idle time on it. It started backfiring through the carb yesterday. Today we changed break in oil and filter fired up car still backfiring and dying. Pulled valve cover on driver side along with coil wire. Noticed the valve on #1 cylinder (the one on the left wasn't moving). Called my engine builder pretty pissed. He told me to pull the pushrods and see if one was bent. They don't look bent so i put them back in and i noticed i could push the lifter up and down on the left side and the other on was rock solid. Just to verify is the left side exhaust? And would a collapsed lifter on exhaust side cause all my backfiring? Thanks FABO.
