My cousin needed to transport his 440 short block from his house to the garage we're assembling it at and neither of us has a truck... we both have Jeeps but it's a PITA to "lower" an engine into an SUV. So I got the brilliant idea of unbolting the trunk lid from my Duster and just hauling the lump in the back of that.

"El Dustero" conversion :evil3::happy6:

Worked like a charm, glad I added some leaves to the back springs!

Lol. I used to own an 87 Mercury Grand Marquis (huge deep trunk) and I had 2 340 short blocks in the well with heads on top and an a body 8 3/4 full rear end in it and still had plenty of room. I had cargo coils on it so it didn't sag and when I opened the trunk to put more in it a buddy just shook his head. We make due with what we have

Holy sh** that's like 1500 lbs :D Sounds like that wasn't one of your project cars ha!

Makes me wish I had an Aussie Ute those things are so flippin' cool...

do I hear banjos

nah just kidding .....you might need a wagon in your future if you keep this up

The look on my friends face was priceless when he looked inside. I couldn't pass up the deals at the time and that was all I had and no garage. I told the guy if you help me drop em in I will take em. He did so I did :). I do like the sound of the banjo in bluegrass...for the record

Hey I love bluegrass too maybe you guys are onto something... in fact I drove this very same car 700 miles (each way) to Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Nobody got it though we ended up in a campground full of young hippie wannabes lol

So what's the 440 goin in?

I did that once, I had a 70 Dart with a slant six. The engine had a knock in it, so I bought a replacement engine at a local auto wreckers. Had to get both the car and replacement engine to the, Do It Yourself Garage. We put the engine in the trunk of the Dart and drove it to the shop. Got a lot of laughs from most of the people there.

We managed to get my 360 block into the trunk of my friends escort. We pulled up to the machine shop and the guy thought we forgot it.

It had to be funny to see four guys get out of a little escort and grab a small block out of the trunk.

My 225 /6 is just about done at the machine block and just a few days ago I was wondering if I should drop it in the trunk of my 03 Neon to get it home. I thought I'd put a hunk of plywood on the floor so it doesn't break through the mat and the spare tire cover. It would be a bare block so I'm guessing 200 lbs? Watch those turns...don't want an inside-out dent in the quarter.

Necessity is the mother of invention. I'm glad you had something to use other than a Schwinn.

I hauled a Dart hood and drivers door out of a u pull it with a 1987 Ford Escort GT Hatchback. When you don't have a truck... I will say that once you own a pickup, you will always own a pickup. A truck gets you out of a lot of scrapes where you would have to ask someone with a truck for help. People I know don't have the time nowadays...

I am into some bluegrass as well and I have to confess that I did this too......with my 68 dart.

The dart makes it easier because it does not have a tail panel in the way.....because when you open the deck lid where the tail panel is on your goes up with the deck lid.

But yea, I hauled a 360 short block to C. Springs and used bungee cords to keep the lid down because it didn't shut all the way with an engine in there LOL

So is that you on the right?

I once had a chance to pick up some parts for my father in laws car at junkyard just outside of Chicago (I live about 150 miles from Chicago)
the best part was I had to be at the consulate in Chicago anyway so it was only a 15 minute detour

I needed a hood, a headlight, a front bumper and a fender and there was no way I could fit it in my car so I borrowed my buddies pick-up
(not sure what size it was but it has the chebby 350 in it)
I picked the truck up late at night and noticed my buddy had topped the tank of for me

so in the morning I load up my kids, the wife and my parents and we started the 150 mile trip to chi-town
we get there early so we drive around for a bit looking for a place to eat

at about 9 oclock I am at my appointment and I am at the desk when my phone rang, so I tossed it to the wifey and let her handle it

once im done at the desk I turn to the wifey and I ask her who it was
turned out it was my buddy who owned the truck...he just called to warn me to be sure to fill up the tank before I left because the fuel gauge is broken and STUCK ON FULL

Nice dart.

I once pulled the front seat out of an 88 Corolla GTS to haul four SBP Rallies with tires home from Bristol to Atlanta.
You do what you gots to do! Lol...

It worked out a lot better than some other cars/vehicles would have for sure. I actually don't have a spare right now (!) and the tire well held the engine in place nicely. That 440 is going into a '71 Satellite-turned-Roadrunner street rod, I have a thread about the build in the big-block forum.
