6.1 Valve spring failure

-
Chris, you mean you sell them with your heads in your shop? W/ or w/o those shields?

I asked our local dodge dealer for those shields but Mopar delivers only with the valve assembled.

We do not use the cages on our performance heads with the 1511 springs.

They are not needed

are extra retainers required? on top and below? And it works on my stock application, your perfomance haads are not special treated for them? Sorry to bother but I wanna be 1000% sure....

bottom line: I buy such a kit and use it without those dampers and still can rev up to 6500. So far so good.

Where can I source it beside ebay ?

? preventing sideplay did the damper too. How is this done with the PSI 1511 springs if using without? Does it work with stock retainers?

The 1511s dont need the " dampers" ( Insulators or cages) because they are less prone to distortion or fracture through harmonics.

Mopar only used the shields as a quick fix on the 6.1 afaik....when reports started coming though on broken springs on 5.7 s especially.

Understand a lot of these breakages occur when guys run rampy cams to high RPM ON TIRED springs.....Ill be changing my springs by the end of the year and mine only have 10k miles on them....but they are green stripe so Im not taking the risk.

Apparently the blue stripe are stronger...I'll post the rating values for all four when I get home...

understand. :)
Have two new springs in my hands. They have grey or white stripe on it. My old ones are yellow. The dealer said they are the newest make/edition... hahaha, remember, I'm german at a german dealer. But I guess if grey ones are good I change all intake springs. why? Because they are cheap and around. So I can drive again. The PSI are than a christmas gift to me ...

This is a copy of a post put up on the LX forum. It was in response to Comp Cams 6.1 springs being broken.

"I run PACs valvetrain dynamics lab, it has everything to do with Comp switching suppliers.

Comp switched manufacturers from Peterson Spring (PAC Racing) in early 2006 to one of our competitors. We made the original 918.

I read that another memberworked for the company that makes all of Manleys and Comp Cams springs. That company would be Associate.

Some of the recent Associate made Manley and Comp Cams springs that I have tested failed extremely early. And good luck getting answers from Comp Cams

Those green striped springs are a bit too weak in my book for that cam. I'd suggest your either add .030 of shim or my preference would be change out to the PSI LS1511ML."

Rat Patrol,

Thanks for the post, good info.

This post clearly shows the reality of current global supply system. Companies are CONSTANTLY trying to reduce costs with little regard to quality or customer service.

The key benefit is that when it is done well, we the consumer get a better product at a lower price. The downside is that it is often done poorly and at the request of marketing or finance department. The result being a lowering of quality.

I used to be a big fan of Craftsman tools, they offered quality tools at a reasonable price. I went to buy a set of ratcheting wrenches for myself for my birthday, they were now made in China and were not nearly as good a quality as the American made wrenches. I then began looking at a lot of there other tools, I actually became sad.

I am getting really tired of companies charging full price (first world prices, i.e. prices that are expensive enough to support a first world worker, a worker who would make 15-20 dollars an hour with benefits) but then sending the work to China. I am not against Chinese made stuff, but if your going to lower your costs, and lower your quality than you better sell it to me at Harbor Freight prices.

Sorry for the rant.

Regards,

Joe Dokes

Problem is Joe..That while companies in your country can get away with the "charade" of "no warranty for performance parts"....they can keep supplying cr@p and using the customer for "R&D".

It would e nice to see your Govt legislate for "implied warranty" - which means a retailer or supplier is liable for failure subject to "reasonable and fair use"

Might not cover the cost of an exploded motor....but would at least cover the springs....at would mean high profile companies cant keep blaming the customer.

Thats my 2c :)

Just curious Modern Muscle, PAC lists a 1235 beehive spring for the 5.7 and 6.1 liter HEMI. Why don't you use these springs?

This is very informative. My car isn't up and running yet and this makes me want to change the springs. I plan on putting some hard miles on my car. Thank you to everyone who has contributed, especially BUSCHI340. Sorry you had to find out this way, but I know it will help out a lot of guys like myself that cars aren't on the road yet.

Thanks rat patrol. Can you say white is an improvement with those numbers compared to yellow?

Learning a lot again :) Coil bind I really have to understand. How can the numbers be different? diameter of the spring material changed?

further more. those dampers. Can it be that Mopar invented them because of the underrated GREEN springs? They are "Mopar only" and only on the 6.1, right?

Cant help you on the coil bind issue - dont know enough about valvetrain specs to comment.

What I can say is that from what Ive read...the "dampers" were used on the 6.1 in response to issues with the 5.7 valvetrain.

The problems with the green stripe spring came later in the 6.1 run....when Chrysler changed the spring specification for some reason.
