TCI vs. Cope

Guessing this is gonna be a really obvious answer but still figured I'd ask. Swapping out the trans in my car and have three options

1: rebuild (if so, what kit would you use?)

2: TCI Streetfighter

3: Cope 904 pro street (is there no super street 904 like there is for the 727?)

Any suggestions on any of these or even a transmission you'd recommend would be great!

I had a TCI converter once, and did not have any trouble, except I had to weld my own ring gear on. However I have been dealing with John Cope for 12 years. His product absolutely second to NONE, and nobody will stand behind their product like John. He is a very honest family man who takes great pride in his work,and a personal friend. Once you invest in a CRT you won't look back and never regret it. My dad also has one of his trans. P.S. my avatar: my car weighs 3390 with driver I hammer on it and never think twice.
 
Going with a cope 904 super street! :) I don't even have the trans yet and already love CRT. 100% helpful and just a great guy!
 
I'd suggest, Do it yourself!

video, ATSG guide and a $200 in parts and you're on your way to never having to pay out the rear for a 904-727 trans.

1500 for a basic trans rebuild and a deep pan... WOW!
 
I had a new TCI street fighter and converter,,,,both junk and needed rebuilding from the get go. This was 3 years ago and I didn't want to try rebuilding myself. Cost me $1200 to fix both.
Now my '71 Fargo project needed a trans and I found a 904 used for $100 and I did exactly as crackedback mentioned plus watched all the YouTube vids I could find. I did upgrade a few additional parts so it was closer to $450 but still a way bigger savings. After doing the 904 I really wish I would have built the 727 previously. I had done shift kits before but never a full rebuild, always thought there would be way more to it then what it really is.
As long as you don't go with the TCI option you'll be good.
 
Thanks for all the thread links guys, unfortunately I really don't have the time to rebuild it myself (or the experience really) think my plan is to buy the cope, but hang on to my old 904 and tinker with it and learn off of it, make it into a vicious little thing haha
 
Doing a classic Rick 180 here guys..... Gonna rebuild it lol just safe myself money and all plus if company's get to name their rebuilt trans's, I feel I have the right to deem mine the official "Naramore power express" hahah XD still would highly recommend CRT just off of customer service

Hahahaha it's always nice to be able to point at something say "see that car that blew your doors off? I built every part"
 
If you do any work on your own cars, rebuild engine, change cams, intakes, brakes, you can build a transmission!

There is a lot of black magic mystifying garbage regarding transmissions.

904/727's are so easy to build. If you want a DVD of the trans rebuild deal, let me know. Great to have a laptop with one in it next to the bench with some plastic covering it. Basically a bunch of sub assemblies that fit together.

With all the money you save you can get a kickass converter. That's the best part!
 
when I rebuilt my 904 I spoke with the big names in the biz. I was unhappy with some of their ideas and prices. I found a local trans builder who beat all their prices on the same parts . He made 1 phone call and i had parts the next day . No charge for shipping either.Sorry but I can't justify paying too much .
 
unfortunately I really don't have the time to rebuild it myself (or the experience really) think my plan is to buy the cope.

While I had confidence to do anything on a car, there were certain things I left to the pro's. I did a few dozen shift kit/plate jobs in my day, with great results, but considering the time involved and the tools needed for a complete overhaul on a auto trans, i had them done for me.....Mostly by ATI, which was just 7 miles from my house at the time.

I know prices are steep now vs the seventies when I was involved, but I still think getting it done by a solid shop is $$$ ahead in the long run.


P.S. I used to get rear gears on 8.75's, 10 bolt's, 12 bolt's, and 8/9" Fords set up for $50 back then...lol.

yep....there is no doubt there is at least one good trans builder nearby....by the time you go out and buy all the necessary tools to build one yourself you could have had it built. last I spoke with Doug about a cash and carry I believe he said labor was in the $250 range....but it was a while ago...

Now this is some funny ****...... Tools? You only need about 6 different standard hand tools to tear a TF Trans apart. Do some research on the subject.

The only person that will be $$ ahead is the shop who took your hard earned $$ for the same thing you could have done yourself for 25% of the price! And you will know Exactly what is in it and how it operates in the process.

I have said this over and over again. If you can put Lego's together....... You can build a TF Trans with ease.
