I have a big block dodge, 383 with a 440 crank= 426. Out of the box Eddy rpm performer heads and intake. Solid lifter lunati cam .544/.566 .243/[email protected] motor made 525 ho and 552 tq with AED 750. Motor used 630 CFM on the dyno. car will hav.e .373 gears and a 3400 stall 10" converter. I now have an old Weiand tunnel ram and am looking at a pair of EDDY carbs. Question is do i need a 500 cfm carbs or 600 cfm carbs? can some one please explain? I would prefer a pm and a phone call as opposed to typing.

Want vac secondaries with manual choke as well. I was told to go with the 500 cfm carbs then another buddy said 650 carbs? seems like a lot of overkill. Motor used 630 cfm so two 500 cfm carbs should be plenty?

I think you would have been happier with two Holley 450s, but that's JMO.

well nothing is happening just yet? i an being told by another tunnel ram guy to go with 2 650 holley dbl pumpers? this is a street car not a race car.

450s are tunnel ram specific. 600s and 650 DPs are not.

Yes and considering everything on this motor is small, i am sure they will offer a decent carb signal and good air speed. the motor used 630 cfm with single carb and was done by 6000 rpm.

You said engine was done by 6000. As in thats where the power peaked? I imagine with that long stroke and that cam and those heads, the power hung on for what? another 6 or 5 hundred rpm?

4 hours from 1st post, to"600s, done deal".First and second posts. You musta got a powerful PM.

No motor was actually done by 5800 peak power, then flat lined form there. It makes a **** ton of torque, i want the tunnel ram more for the old school cool factor. Just want to get the right carbs on it so its not a hassle to deal with.

T-rams are cool alright. And with all that stroke she'll be a tractor.
I've never had one, and the guys I know all give up on them.I have heard they need a lot of pumpshot. To me that means DP carbs, and small primaries. But thats just hearsay.
Good luck and happy tuning.

RRR nailed it, with the 450's. Unless your going racing, velocity past the Venturi's/boosters is your best friend.

1 pair of 500cfm Edelbrock carbs. im pretty sure they would work quite awsome straight out of the box.

Yes i am thinking the 500's now smaller venturies better airspeed more bottom end and better throttle response.

its basically a stock 440 with a cam upgrade. no serious work done on it. the carbs are using 98 primary jets and 95 secondary jets with the matching metering rods. they are set up to operate together without progressive linkage. it starts and runs perfect on the street with plenty of go. no stumble , no bog , but I haven't had my foot all the way in it..yet

Ok cool i was looking at the 1406 as well, i have this nagging feeling for some reason that the 500's will be too small?

i went with the 1406 for a couple reasons. they are easy to tune. they are plentiful at good prices. I know them well and are super easy to set up and are mechanical secondaries. I like holleys but I have enough fun trying to get just one dialed in lol. I think a 500 would work just as well but these are what I had laying around. this is my first go around with a tunnel ram and I have had no issues what so ever, not even one single fuel leak. I set the carbs up exactly the same including the mixture screws all 1 turn out and I haven't had to touch it minus the idle setting.

Hey 73AbodEE

One think I've always wanted to do was a T-ram,on my 360. And the one thing that always kept nagging at me was the non progressive linkage.
How do you find that, in stop-and-go traffic?
Do you find it at all difficult to control a steady speed at low throttle openings?
Is there a learning curve as to throttle control?
Any sage advice?

I start it and drive it like I would a normal 4 barrel , its actually smoother than you think. I thought it might be a little touchy myself , but it works very well. you have more throttle response a lot sooner , but the dual return springs keep my foot from the temptations LOL. you can tell by the feel that there is definitely power there. im still in the cruising around , merging into traffic stages , playing around a little in first gear from time to time , I haven't gotten to the all out , see if I can blow it up stage yet LOL. it is actually very street , everyday driver friendly if you don't mind using twice the fuel lol.

Last time I messed with Carter carbs was the AFBs on my stage 2 max wedge. The edelbrocks, they have mechanical secondaries?!?
