If I was to paint my 74 Duster head liner ,can it be done and what type paint to use.I just pulled it out and plan on using it too save money.

The cardboard, fiber board one I assume?

I painted mine with interior dye that I got at O'Rielly's.

If it's the cardboard type, consider wrapping it in modern headliner material from a fabric store. looks like a brand new car and would change the color for you as well.

I painted the one in my 75, it was cardboard like yours should be. I took it out, cleaned it well, scuffed it lightly with a stiff brush and painted it with dupli color (or maybe it was plasti coat...i cant remember) rattle can hot rod black. It came out real nice.

Hey Don,
I recently did mine with flat black Rustoleum and a 4 inch foam roller and it turned out real nice.
At first I did it with satin but it was just way to shiny, so I went back over it with two coats off flat.
Home depot had a 4" foam roller and a little tiny paint tray kit for less than 5 bucks.

Sweet I was just a home depot takeing a look see,if it work for you well ,i wonder if they have flat white?

did the same as trailbeast. used rustoleum flat black. been on it for three years and is holding up great. dave.

I had thought about covering mine, but decided against it because if the outer layer of the fiber board starts coming loose then you would end up with a sagging fabric headliner.

i guess anythings possible, mines been on the car since 72 and still looks great. washing them or getting them wet might cause it to delaminate. mine, being black, does'nt need much attention, so i rarely clean it. dave.

I used a adhesion promoter first then painted mine with paint used for vinyl. Turned out great. Went from gold to black.

I covered mine, but had painted it previously. I used Krylon Fusion paint. Took quite a bit cause it soaked in. Looked good, but board was already water damaged. Could not repair it good enough for paint. I think if I was going to paint another one in the car I would try rolling to avoid the fumes and overspray.

Even better, did you have to wash befor painting? the liner that is lol.

Nope, just paint the crap out of it since it soaks up the first coat anyway. :D

2 of the satin that I didn't like and then two flat over that.

I took mine out to paint it. Roll the front windows down, remove the tip out back windows (b pillare comes wth them) and you can get it out in one piece if you are careful. At least in my 75 Dart Sport.

For what it's worth mine has lasted over a decade.

If you are going to spray it, use a paint gun.

I must be the unlucky one, I did one a few years ago, and driving with the windows open allowed air to get up in there and it started separating.

I'm thinking the fiber started separating from moisture or something. Once that happened there wasn't any saving it.

Below is description from my build, how I got mine out with all glass in. It was of course much easier going back in through the back with glass out. This pic is spray painted with Krylon Fusion paint. Other than the bubbling areas, this looked good in the car. Out like this, paint looks grainy and uneven. My point being that I would not get too hung up on a less than perfect finish. I ended up covering with fabric after repairing the damage to hide the way I pieced it together, otherwise the roll on sounds like a good way to do it.

Here's the headliner. FYI - took this out the passenger door with window down. Otherwise all glass is still in the car. Also, back seat is out but front bench is still in, seats laying forward. Would not have made it out the drivers side because the seat hit the steering wheel. I turned it so front came out first. Right side all the way down at rocker, left up at window level over the door. Slight flex up in center and eased it out...

ya, driving with the windows down could be the culprit. I'm either driving with the a/c, or the heater so I rarely drive with the windows down. down here it's either hot or cold with very little in the middle. lol. dave.

Well I painted it looksssssssssssssssss great, thanks for all the help you all ROCK.

Well Don, if there is one thing you can count on it's the fact that if something can be destroyed by trying to fix it one of us has probably already done it. :D

Glad you like how it came out.

Easy enough to do, but not so easy to get it to stay.
Especially with the old cardboard style if it's disintegrating at all, because this old stuff separates really easy.
The paint seems to hold them together.
