I just bought a bumper from someone on FABO? I JUST ordered it seconds ago, and then realized that there were slots in it that aren't in my old beat up one... What are they? in the middle parts n off to the sides...

Did you try askin the seller?

Those lower slots are bumper jack slots. This bumper is off of a 71 72 73 scamp not a 70 dart Same bumper minus the slots. The upper slots look to be added.

The upper slots with the holes under them are for the bumperettes, and the slots down low and farther apart are for the jack to lift from.

This is a 73 Swinger

Well there you go. Perfectly good bumper.

Since the bumper needs rechroming or painting, could I just fill in the extra slots semi-easily?

I guess that depends on your skills. How would we know the answer to that?

Hey RustyRatRod, you can go ahead and not post comment on my threads in the future. You are normally rude and extremely unhelpful, and I do not ask questions on FABO to be mocked. If you do not want to show respect, then you can go elsewhere.

I asked a legitimate question. We don't have crystal balls here. We don't know what you know how to do. That's why I asked. No disrespect involved at all.

But I will take your advice.

This is what I mean... The first thread I ever posted, I asked a question about my dart and you recommended that I scrap it. Several other times you were blatently rude for no apparent reason but to make yourself laugh....

You actually are quite disrespectful to many on Fabo, I hope you do avoid me in the future thanks...

AMEN never ending useless comments .

Since steel is underneath the chrome, I see no reason why the holes couldn't be welded up and then smoothed with a grinder. I would be careful about how you remove the old chrome around the holes, because chrome is very nasty stuff. You would NOT want to inhale it in either powder of vaporous form. I'm sure your guy that rechromes the bumper will know the answers and he can weld up the holes.

Thank you for the helpful response

It does depend on your skills. In order for a chrome finish to look good the surface prep must be perfect. Not ground smooth, but polished to a flawless surface.

Call your chromer before you do any welding, usually they just want to fill the holes and do repairs themselves. i truthfully dont know if thats due to a special process, or if customers dont do the repairs clean enough to chrome over, but I have heard it several times. Guess it makes sense it has to be perfect, since you cant just use filler to get it straight as you would with body work.

I'd sell them or try to cancel the order. You could be opening up an expensive can of worms here.

I'm pretty sure my Father's 71 Dart had those same slots.

I liked the look.

I agree with Johnny if say you don't weld the holes up to par for the plater and they chrome it and later down the road somehow the plating doesn't hold up then they are going to blame you and you are going to blame them possibly....Just be careful

Buying a different bumper might be an option too as stated.

Do later bumpers not have the slots? I never looked.

I never minded the slots, but I hated the rust in the chrome around them.
