So I'm wanting to keep my Carter fuel pump with the 5/16th stock outlet and connect it to my new Edelbrock 1406 carb with a 3/8th connection. Edelbrock sells a universal kit, Edelbrock 8135, but the price is nuts for 2 feet of fuel line, a few clamps, some fittings, and a filter I won't even use. What are my options?

I can't find a 5/16" NPT fitting with a 3/8" barb line to screw right into the pump. I can cut the line like I would have to in order to use the Edelbrock kit, buy me a few feet of 3/8" fuel line, but what is the compression fitting I need to take this 5/16" metal fuel line to a 3/8inch rubber line? I'm sure I can do this for less than $40 that this kit costs!

My other option is to put the Edelbrock 1720 fuel pump in with the 3/8th output already at the pump. I just don't think I need this $150 fuel pump for slightly modified 318 motor.

Thanks for any advice. Links to any fittings that would work would be appreciated!

I used a Spectre fuel filter with multiple size inlet/outlet options. 5/16 hose on inlet - 3/8 hose outlet to carb. You can find these at Autozone. I don't like the glass part of it, but it works for now.

.

Interesting fuel filter. I might install that before the pump for a second filter. I really want to keep my date coded filter I have now between the pump and the carb.

If anyone has pictures of their setup please post, especially anything with a 5/16th outlet to a 3/8th inch carb. The carb I'm connecting to is the Edelbrock 1406.

I posted your solution. That's what the original factory Carter had on it.

I don't think that is the solution I was looking for. That screws into the carb I believe. I'm looking for the compression fitting that would take a 5/16 metal fuel line, that I already have, and allow me connect a 3/8 rubber fuel line to that to run to a 1406 Edelbrock. I have a factory Carter BBD carb. That's not what I'm trying to connect to. It's for sale actually! Was just rebuilt at Carburetor USA.

Ok.

Ok im confused. Whats your main fuel line size? By what you stated i would guess 5/16. Why do you want to go from 5/16 to 3/8 from the fuel pump to carb? Just run 5/16 from pump to carb. How long is the metal fuel line? Can you cut it and use a hose in between it and the carb? I have a edelbrock carb on my 340 along with a carter fuel pump. Im running 5/16.
Also when you say secondary fuel filter do you want to add one before the pump? If so that would be your primary filter.

I dont understand why you want to go from 5/16 to 3/8 before the carb

I can take some pics of my setup on my edelbrock if youd like

I had the same set up on my car. I also used a fuel filter that had the 5/16" inlet side and a 3/8" outlet side going to the carb. That seemed to work fine.

I wonder what life would be like without a tubing bender and double flair tool.... :) I'd go with the fitting.

I just cut my 5/16" line, about 4 inch piece of hose, then k&n fuel filter, then piece of hose to the 90 on the carb. Was easy as easy could be

Jegs also has this fitting to convert the 5/16" line to a 3/8" hose barb. http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS+Performance+Products/555/159202/10002/-1 I think this is a generic version of what is in the Edelbrock kit.

Exactly what I needed. I hate how JEGS says "free shipping" then charges $5.99 to put this thing in a box. "handling"

But now I can just buy some 3/8th rubber fuel line and use my existing date coded filter. I guess if I clamp that filter tight I'll be ok with 3/8th fuel line? Plan is cut the 5/16th hard line, install adapter, then a short piece 3/8th rubber hose, filter, then 3/8th rubber hose up to a banjo connection on the 1406 edelbrock. Sound doable?

Sure, love to see your set up. I'm also running a Carter fuel pump. I'm putting a new intake on and a new 1406 edelbrock. My existing 5/16th line coming off the fuel pump will need to be 3/8th at the end to connect to the new carb. And yes I planned on adding a second filter before the pump. It can easily be stuck into the 5/16th rubber line going to the pump. Just extra protection.

Rusty's solution lets you run a stock style line to the carb. You don't have to run a 3/8 line to the carb.

Thanks Nuke. My stock fuel line connects at the front of my stock 2 barrel carter carb. My new connection will be at the side of the 1406. No way to connect the stock fuel line to this carb without at least some modification. I do see how the item you linked would allow me to connect 5/16th rubber line to my new carb if I chose to run 5/16th all the way up.

I'm no expert for sure but I didn't see how Rusty's solution would work in my situation. Not trying to do it the stupid way or the hard way, just the right way!

My solution is the right way. Just how the factory did it. All you need is that one fitting and one piece of metal fuel line. Cut the line where you want the filter, barb either end and install.

You sure want to keep that factory date code filter, but why when your connection will not be what the factory did. Mine would.

Is the date coded filter a 3/8" filter? I always assumed the majority of the stock type filters were 5/16" The Edelbrock is similar to a stock 4 barrel Carter (AFB), so if you don't want to bend your own line, you should be able to get a stock style line from one of the restoration places (Classic, Right Stuff, etc.), but those are usually 5/16".

With that 5/16-3/8 fitting from jegs, just make sure you get it exactly where you want it when you tighten it. If you have to loosen it, it will leak.

No. It is 5/16. Read where he talks about 3/8 not being too big to clamp down on it.

If the filter is a 5/16", then the metal line adapter for the Edelbrock would be the best option. I looked and couldn't find a 5/8-20 thread to 5/16" hose barb. I was hoping Edelbrock, or somebody, sold one that you could pick up at an O'Reiley's or something, but didn't see it. When I bought a Street Demon, it came with a 3/8" and 5/16" hose barb and a 3/8" inverted flare connector. It would be nice if Edelbrock did the same.

73, I may have the 5/16" inverted flare adapter. I can take a look tomorrow if you are interested. You could probably stick a 5/16" IF hose barb in there and use rubber hose. Then you wouldn't have to worry about cutting the fuel line or anything. I did the cutting thing...didn't work out too well for me :)

I just looked and here is what I have. The fitting needs a new gasket, but the setup should work for you.
