Hey guys I'm trying to do a little planning ahead on my interior. I have been doing alot of thinking about my headliner. I have the foam backed hard (cardboard) style liner I have been looking online and in catalogs cant seem to find any all the ones I see is the soft cloth type with the bows. I have been thinking about just trying to do one myself and make one. I can get cardboard for free at work so I'm thinking get some cardboard and cut and piece it to fit then glue or epoxy all the seems to make it look clean and not pierced together then use some type of cloth or vinyl and spray adhesive and glue the material to the cardboard then use some clips around the edges under the trim to keep it together and tight. Has anyone ever tried or done anything like this before? Here are some pics of my current headliner. Unfortunately everything needs replaced. Headliner sail panels sun visors seats dash pad I'm not sure about the door panels yet I'm gonna try and save them

Just read jpars thread that gives me some ideas. Maybe instead of starting over I can just patch the part of mine that is ripped and just recover it. That would be alot easier than trying to fabricate a hole new one like he did. Mine is pretty solid except for the passenger side. The sail panels I could probably recover too. Lots of good info. I'm having a hard time finding material that I like to cover it tho.

also if you need to put a hole in the side of your console to make it fit a 4 speed LOL There's a sticky for that. But if you need to build a whole new headliner from scratch? You need to search for it LOL

Never scared. Lol just try to do everything the cheapest and quickest way. I dont have alot of free time and have no free money! Haha just out of curiosity is there anyone that makes reproduction hard headliners?

yeah they sell them on the Internet it's a piece of plastic for like over $200. That's not even covered with material. Then you end up having to trim it anyways!
You're going to have to take it out to repair it correctly correct? You're going to take it out and Patch it all up correct?
Sometimes patching and fixing and trying to correct and make something work is a lot more timely than just cutting some new material. Again that 4 by 8 sheet of 1 plywood was under 15 bucks and the major amount of the cost. this is exactly why I built this for under eighty bucks you can't even get the material to build one for under 200 online. And again everyone that I've heard of had to put it up there two or three times to cut it and trim it to make it work. As opposed to an exact copy of the one you have?

Yea 200 for a piece of plastic is stupid lol I make plastic for a living can get all kinds of plastic.
I wonder if a cheap piece of wall paneling would work for the backer?

That is what I like about you. Lol we think alike everything I think up you have already tried or done Haha. What about your dash pad did you have to replace it or was it good? I'm gonna need some ideas there too mine is trash!! I think it's too warped and cracked to cover with a cap.

I think those dart pads are different than the duster I'm not sure?
 
my car ended up being more of a drag car for the first number of years and I just didn't even use one. Considered an extra waight! LOL and the one I got had been completely ripped off the dashboard bending up some of the metal even. They obviously didn't want to take the time to take the screws off but just rip the damn thing off and leave me with a bent up twisting piece of crap. What I did was just watch the swap meet still I found one that's in decent condition for a hundred bucks. That's the current one I have on right now it has a small crack and some chips in it but is still very very usable. I just picked up another one a few months ago that is in almost mint condition that yet to put it on. The dash pad is one of those things you need to keep your eye out for plain and simple.

No I don't think that wood paneling would work at all. A lot of times it's that fiberboard or whatever and it's not pliable enough. It would snap I think and it's too thick way too thick.
If you got access to different thicknesses of big sheets of plastic than definitely you've got a good material. I would absolutely try that if I had it.
 
Lexan 4ft x 8ft and .177 thick with a heat gun or torch , it wont break and you can bend,twist and it wont break, $138, sand and paint. Also if you ever need to take it out and put it back ,no problem., You can find it at salvage building material stores cheaper, the price i quoted is Home Depot
 
I changed the title to this thread because I pulled out my door panels today to start cleaning them. They where in my old building that apparently leaks. Needless to say they are trash. So it looks like I'm gonna be making door panels too. I have an idea tho more to come.

I haven't done the door panels but those are probably the simplest. They do so the material at Jo-Ann Fabrics I mean the cardboard material in their kind of Automotive section. I really can't imagine that being any more than dropping your old one on a new piece of board and cutting it out.

I have an idea. My original door panels have the fake wood grain on the top 4 or 5 inchs or so and vinyl on the rest so what I'm thinking is getting some plain wood sheets like and some marine vinyl like you recover boat seats and such. And staining and clear coating the wood and then adhere the vinyl. Make it look like the original except with real wood grain. I'm having a little trouble finding wood sheets thin enough with pretty grain tho.
 
Like this vinyl this is pleated marine vinyl. Looks pretty close to the original.
