I'm not a machinist or metallurgist but was wondering ... other than cost couldn't a brake drum be machined from billet steel / iron?
Thoughts?
Pros?

That's already been done ..or aluminum with steel liners?

Some early 60's pontiacs came with aluminum. No steel liners.or aluminum with steel liners?
So I guess it could be done. I would expect to pay big money though. Some early 60's pontiacs came with aluminum. No steel liners.
In that case, other than the cost, you could have billet drums made. My concern would be the metallurgy involved. Would a billet drum hold up to the heat generated? My question has taken sn aluminum turn.
Im asking about steel /iron billet and nothing csst
There is said to be difference in the depth between SBP and LBP drums. If you need small bolt pattern drums you could redrill the 4.5 pattern drums.
Different width on the shoes? You can make lots of parts worth with a little imagination and a good machine shop. There is said to be difference in the depth between SBP and LBP drums.
I ordered axles with both patterns and plan on drilling the drums for both as well.
I might have to turn them on the lathe to remove a little
