Why not a 413 ?

good luck. They are rare. That said, a Torker II is a solid choice as well and what I’m actually running in my 440
 
meh. that is not exactly true. 413 pistons are about 10 bucks more a piece off the shelf than 440 pistons. and 60 on a set of 8 with similar piston specs as the 440s, just with a different bore size. This thru summit. The big factor is selection is limited.

Most piston outfits can build anything you want... and you get a better slug than those cheap KB/Silv-o-lite. But you won't find them in the catalogs... you need to pick up the phone!
 
Nothing wrong with 413 but couldn't see building one over a 440 unless you already have or getting it free and be relatively mild 350-450 ish hp build. Here most 440 cost a least $1000 for a rebuildable core.

That is what I ended up buying, a 440
 
I know a guy who had a 413, bored to 4.23 with a dome piston, 12.5-1, TF 270 heads, made 725 HP.
 
I have owned and driven bone stock 413 Chryslers that out ran 68 383 Road Runners. Much to the embarrassment of the RR owners.
Something nobody else has mentioned is that with long stroke and small bore you can get decent fuel mileage out of that 413.
 
I feel more comfortable with the thicker 413 cylinder walls, I've seen a lot of 440s lately cracking cylinder walls or have pin holes.
Who says they're thicker? have you verified it? Or are you simply parroting what you've read on the internet? I'm not tryin to be smart, I want to know where you got your information and how solid it is.

And I just been wasting my time here trying to get this information out so that you guys understand what the hell you've got? Go back to post 71 through 73 and read about the Big Blocks and how thick or not thick the walls are.

I did. I saw that. That's good info, thank you. But did I miss where it talked about cylinder thickness? I trust NOTHING regarding that but a sonic test on the block at hand. I've seen too many vary that were early, late and everywhere in between. With the main webbing like you posted, that's pretty solid for each different casting. In other words, you can COUNT in it being as described. But cylinder wall thickness? I've never seen anything concrete other than a sonic test of the particular block in question.

ok, I'm familiar with the 440 source stuff. Read all through it before. I still will not bore one over .030 without a sonic test. No way no how. I'm not disagreeing with what they say, I'm saying what I will and won't do with my money and boring without a sonic test AIN'T it.

It's similar to the 351 Cleveland. Everything you read and hear says they cannot go past .030. Yet, I've seen several instances first hand where blocks were sonic tested and could go all the way to 4.100 with cylinders still thick enough to run a boosted application. To me, it just boils down to the individual block. I mean......what's an extra 100 or so bucks for a sonic test to be sure? Sounds like you're on that same page.

I like my blocks to be Sonic checked and magged before I spend any more money on them for machine work.
 
The big draw back to a 413 in my opinion is pistons, if to find a set of forged stock type replacement pistons you need to remember they were for closed chamber heads. The real solution is to order custom pistons that work with your heads.

Yep, the other solution is to build a engine with shelf parts 383-400-440, or small block.
Or invent a time machine for 1964 so the max wedge parts are on the shelf & bring them back to 2022
