1300 hp mercury comet brake failure crash

You're still looking at it backwards, the vehicle is CONSUMING the same amount of torque, both engines have enough torque potential to achieve the unloaded "idle" speed of 2200rpm, but the percentage of each engines maximum torque potential at that throttle position is dramatically different. The cylinder & inlet pressures are going to be much higher in the smaller 110ci engine, & may be at 35-40% of it's max output on the level, when loaded on a grade those pressures increase and the output efficiency goes up until it has reached maximum and the vehicle will settle at whatever mph that is. The larger engine, not to mention supercharged, may only be operating at 8% of it's max potential output, thus it has much more capacity for increased load before reaching maximum efficiency and output.
So your saying that testing in the scenario I have laid out that torque will increase as the rpms are lowered with the throttle fixed.
I don't know if I can measure torque at that low of rpm. but I can sweep the motor down with my load controller on the engine dyno. I am going to try it on the next motor I have on the dyno to see if I can do it. I'll report back.
Does the torque spec from the mustang dyno at 50 mph sound about right to you? At what rpm would you estimate the vehicle was turning before impact?

Yes.
That is a bugaboo(technical term, lol) with most dynos, 2-2.5K is usually the bottom of the pull.
I'll go back & look at that post, nothing jumped out at Me when I 1st looked it over.
Since He toasted the brakes trying to contain it, I'll have to assume it was stuck at the stated 2200K, but have no idea if it was actually in gear when impact occured. To be honest, I don't know what trans is in the car other than an automatic, I stopped watching in disgust at the "17 years ago you couldn't get better brakes" idiocy.
To be clear, the amount of impact was based soley on the vehicle's velocity, how far it travelled after impact would have been altered by the factors of engine rpm, torque,& trans engagement.

Interesting, forgot those, what is the width & "tunnel clearance" height stock?

i wish i could tell you, but i got rid of that bronco several years ago
i know the yukon seat fit like a glove, side to side in that truck but it did sit just inches from the floor
so tunnel clearance may be non excitant

I couldn't agree more. there is alot of contempt for the Comet owner guy because it is perceived that he has "money" like working hard and having money to build a nice car is wrong or something.
I couldn't give 2 ***** what's in his wallet or bank accounts, it's the total lack of judgement & negligent, irresponsible behavior I care about. How is calling these fools out bad for us? It's better to let people outside of our automotive domain know that We're not all negligent dufusses, that We're NOT OK with it, and We expect more from Ourselves than this.
Ya know, I had an older dude come to Me for an alignment years ago, his pride & joy....I believe it was a '56 Chevy. It had an aftermarket frt. disc brake setup with different steering hardware, & when I shook it down, half of the hardware was either installed incorrectly, or just plain loose....bolts, spacers etc. The steering knuckles were moving around a ton, we're not just talking a caliper bracket here.
When I informed Him I was unable to perform the alignment & why, He acted like I just told Him He had a tiny *****, all of his offspring looked & smelled like a pack of stray mutts, & His old lady was routinely doing all the frat houses on the weekend!!!!! We offered to correct the issues & recheck the frt. end if He'd like, ...nope. He took off & never came back.
Missed His business like an itchy nutsack. His ego was more important to Him than the condition & proper operation of His "Pride & Joy", and more important than the safety of other motorists & pedestrians.

Meh, in the end it is a car accident. Calling the guy negligent and stupid doesn't help. You sir are an (name calling will get you a free vacation, watch yourself) for being that way . I hope it happens to you....

I would say the as-assembled Comet, + the passengers(by eyeball) a good 400+ lbs, that weight is not representative. Supercharged big block, a trans & rear axle built to handle it, plus chassis/body mods & reinforcements, I'm betting that ride was rolling closer to 3,700+ lbs. easy.

1)It wasn't an accident, it was a totally preventable collision.
2)Calling them both negligent goofs that used extremely poor judgement is ACCURATE.
3)No, I'm 100% justified in feeling this way.
4)Wishing something bad on another makes YOU a childish a**hole, grow up.
5)You were right when You stated plastering it all over YT is another bad idea, but it may be the wake-up call some need. We definitely don't need these incident's attention & exposure.

Yeah well that's just like your opinion, man.. :)

I must say that all this name calling like a child really is embarrassing to see in this thread, settle it down or I will have to hand out a vacation slip.

Please cool down and stay on track or this thread will be gone as well.

Closer to the Mercury Marquis. The spec for that is 20.7 HP @ 50 mph.

I think I have to put a 500” motor in my go kart and keep the band brake…..idle set to 3,000 rpm….What’s the name of that show again?

Uncle Tonys "boiling brake fluid" theory doesnt hold true. It is/was brake fade from heat, and the guys rotors looked like crap, that will cause issues also. (Watch the original video they show the rotors through the wheel and they look hacked up) You cant turn composite rotors, the machine surface from an aamco lathe wont do the job properly. The fact that most of Uncle Tonys crew and folks that follow and like him called these guy stupid so they can capitalize on others misfortune is why I have zero time for most so called "car people" these days. I quit going to Carlisle years ago, and I live an hour away, mostly because of guys like Uncle Tony selling junk for ridiculous prices. I have news for ya if you are driving around in a 55 year old car and think you are cool now a day? and that's all you have for dependable transportation? you aren't a genius by any means. Certainly you aren't very accomplished .

and don't wear a helmet or racing suit, be sure to do the runs in an area where there are innocent bystanders and plenty of hard objects to run into

I would agree that anyone who capitalises on another's misfortune is a prick, regardless of what the circumstances were.
Having said that discussing the owner of that Comet screwed up in a open car forum is just the plain facts
Im just glad the accident wasn't worse
As far as brake fluid boiling goes, in the video I got the impression he had no brake pedal resistance.
We dont know how old the brake fluid was and its entirely possible the fluid wasnt within specs due to moisture which certainly would of reduced the boiling point.
Riding the brakes as the driver did could have boiled the fluid and that would have led to as we all know no brake pedal
I didnt watch what UT said about then accident and probably wont. As far as im concerned most of these TV car shows are entertainment

i have 5 cars and i just like driving my 50 year old car , has upgraded brakes seat belts new tires every season check once a month at my friends shop , hate the new cars to many distractions , just wish i were as accomplished as you are

I agreed about the carlisle part.
What are you trying to accomplish here?

That’s the entire point of this; some of y’all might not pay attention, but legislators introduce bills because of crap like this.

give those geniuses in state houses and congress enough cannon fodder and you won’t be able to change your own oil without fear of being fined.

Exactly.

Breaking News:

I stopped by my friends machine shop yesterday to check on the x-heads and LD6B. It's a father/ son business, Cogswell Marine and Motorsports in Chula Vista, CA.
They asked if I had seen the video of the guy from N. County San Diego with the red Merc? They started cursing him up and down. They built the engine. They thought he was stupid when he was having them build it years ago. They said he came in wanting all these parts in it that wouldn't work together but wanted over 1000 hp. They got him straightened out and it made just over 1,000 on their dyno. In the video he claims HE built it in his garage and it made 1,300 hp.
They also blasted him for using drag brakes on the street. I didn't catch that when I watched the video but what idiot uses drag racing brakes on the street? Those are meant to stop a car like one time. On the street, the more you use them the more they don't work, and he was riding them!
They said the guy installs audio/video equipment by trade and the wiring is the ONLY thing the guy actually did himself on that car. They said the only reason he has over 200k in the car is because he doesn't know how to do **** himself and bought a bunch of parts that never even made it onto the car because they wouldn't work.
I hope the family that got hit gets what they deserve. And I hope this guy gets what he deserves.
