Been lurking about a year, with some random posts here and there.

Picked up this car a little over a year ago from a friend who had owned it since the 90s and daily drove it throughout high school/college, but had stopped running for him and sat for at least the last 10-12 years. Prior to that it was originally purchased/owned by a little old lady out of South San Francisco.

73, originally rallye red, 225 automatic, space duster, bikini vinyl (rust)...that's about it....Oh and a tired single stage Viper Red Earl Scheib paint job. Nothing special, but a relatively rare find, even for California, where these will still rot in to the ground if left unattended. It does have some rust here and there, small bubbles in the paint, and some repaired crash damage so not worth restoring given it's a run-of-the-mill duster, but a great foundation for a fun street/strip car.

I was able to get it running as soon as I brought it home, but some collapsed front brake lines were incentive enough for me to start teardown. I've fully built a couple cars so far in my lifetime (datsuns), and I always strive to maintain a period correct look, but upgrading with "modern" mechanicals along the way. This build will be no different. I'm about half way through it now, just waiting on some $$$ for the motor/trans. I stripped it down to the body, repaired some rust along the way, installed an entirely new/rebuilt front subframe and a shortened 8.8 out of an explorer. Suspension upgrades include rear mono-leaf, caltracs knock off, double adj QA1 front and rear, tubular upper control arms, rebuilt LCA, QA1 tension rods, and some other stuff I forgot. I picked up a used 360/727, but after teardown they seem to be junk. They will make good cores.

Anyways here's the pics. I suppose I'll start a build thread?

As I got it:

You don’t type like a millennial. Excellent story and congrats on a nice ride. What caltracs knock offs did you use?

Ha, thanks! We're not all bad.

It's a no-name knock off I purchased from one of those Chinese amazon apps...Aliexpress. The price was nearly unbelievable, but everything seems legit and it was to my door in a few days. Dropped shipped from New York, not China, so who knows what the story is on the kits?

Welcome from WI. Off to a great start.

Right on man. Congrats and welcome! I see you're in Galt. I grew up there on the West side of town.
Thanks! I'm on the west side of the tracks just outside the city limits.

I've been looking at your threads on wiring recently as the next step is rewiring the entire car and I'm planning/getting everything ready. They've been very helpful.

Looks decent. Just make sure the hardware is up to snuff. Some times they save cost by substituting junk hardware in. It’s nice to see you put a good set of shocks on there also.

There are a few of us on fabo who were born in the " millennial generation" not many but we do exist.

Welcome, nice duster.

One thing about millennials is we always thought dusters were cool from the time we were kids. Older generations once saw the duster as the AL Bundy car that no one wanted. LOL

G
That’s funny. I saw the duster as the Al Bundy car that I wanted.

Sweet Duster!

I don't type like a millenial either even though I am one lol, bad spelling/grammar annoys the hell out of me.

How does a millennial type?

I never considered it to be an aggregate skill but rather an individual thing.

Do boomers write the same?

LOL, OMG i literally can’t believe you don’t know.

Like that ^^^^^

no I really didn't, I wasn't raised in the USA so this classification of generations is unique to the U.S. I only came to know I am a millennial because someone told me that because I was born in 1986.

Also some of my grammar errors are because English isn't my first language, but I'm trying.

Your English always has been, and continues to be perfectly fine. Much better than a lot of people here. I remember watching one of your you tube videos and I was shocked to hear you speak.

These days it seems like even "newer" magnum engines are cores. I picked up a 5.9 from the late 90s. Heard it run, sounded fine, but had a huge cylinder ridge and the whole engine was whooped, but that was only seen with it apart.

a ford 8.8 is a very good choice these days. strong and available. I have a 63 valiant wagon and I have a 8.8 from a 92 ranger. The ranger is a slightly smaller axle diameter than the exploder and it only has drums but I didn't have to narrow it. where else can anyone get limited slip 3.73 gears for a hundred dollars. Two black marks on the street is better than one.
