bottom line is you have to grow the cubic inches or there is no conversation. This is all to me like saying a slant six with a turbo can beat a stock 340. I mean..... ok
The debate is basically stroke vs bore, I think 408 4.03" x 4.00" vs 408 4.14" x 3.79" might been better example, Since they could use same top end parts.

naw... it's small block vs big block with about the same cubes. Top ends won't be the same, heads and intakes are definitely different. Of course, the stroker kit small block will get good compression pistons.....
 
Bore size and all that is important, but it mainly comes down there more aftermarket higher flowing heads available for big block especially in the average consumer level.
 
Most people can't envision past what the factory deemed performance engines anyways, bet if the 318 came built with high CR 340 specs there would be less debates on here. I bet the 340 have less love, but that has little effect on it's capability.
The design is identical. The 318 was hobbled with low compression and a crappy emissions cam. A quick cure is to install a 360 or 340 cam. Fixing compression and bigger valves with minor porting wakes them up more at minimal cost, far a snappy street engine.

Agree. I like to compare a 318 to a 327 chevy. There were two barrel, low compression 327s, usually in a full size impala with no gear, and a powerglide. They couldn't pull a fat girl off a tricycle.
The 318 is very similar to that 327, a low-po workhorse, with no pretense of performance, so no reputation, except as a workhorse.
The difference is, of course that there were very-much thoroghbred versions of the 327. Solid cams, big holleys or fuel injection, 11 to 1, good manifolds, and rated well above one horse per cube. 350 chevies built there reputation on the foundation of the 327. A 318, never got any factory performance parts, so no reputation. The 318 Mopar owner has to add his own performance parts, and build his own reputation.

Plenty of 500 hp LS5.3s around. A 318 is a good set of heads away from the same glory.

100%, to me the only reasons not build a 318 is if rpms/gear/stall is too much for you for hp/performance level you want. Not just for the 318 that basically goes for any engine.

I believe a 5.3 LS head will outflow a 440 906 head. A 318 is a GREAT set of heads (and more) away.

But who is gonna put trick flows on a 318?

It's no argument, you build some fast small blocks on a not so big budget.:thumbsup:
 
Here’s one for the big block guys. I’m Facebook friends with Al and he a moderator on Moparts so I doubt he’s a member here. Lots of B1, Indy, and Preditor builds. I love this truck. So I don’t have more info for you guys.

The biggest issue with the 318 is piston availabilty. Of course, at this point if you want something other than 30 year old pistons you have to order them custom anyway. Unless you like 5/64 or 1/16 ring packages. I don’t.

My buddy put SM’s on his 318. Couldn’t get him to front for at least one day on the dyno so I have no clue what it makes for power.

Sadly, I made it run last July or august. He hasn’t driven it yet because he can’t get all the brake leaks stopped. I’m not fixing that for him.

These days 5/64 rings are definately not what we want. Might be able to find 1/16 rings pistons. Going to 0.043", 1.2mm.or 1.0mm for a 318 would definately be custom, which would be a cost step up.
On a cost basis, the 1/16 rings would be acceptable in my mind. Only reason to use 5/64 rings is if you are reusing the pistons.
 
I didn't bother to read 5 pages of fighting and bickering about which is better or why, but I'll offer this. In a normally aspirated engine the one with the biggest bore
has the highest potential horsepower output.

Me too. 500 inch motors in light bracket cars that run 10.60’s. Ultra common

This car has a basically stock 440 with a small flat tappet cam, aluminum intake, absolutely nothing fancy, and it will run 9.90 in the 1/4.
